Grief shaming: Have you been doing it without realising?

Grief shaming is judging how someone appears to be dealing with a bereavement. It could be criticising them for appearing too sad, not sad enough, not moving on, or moving on too quickly.

We all react individually when someone we care about dies, so there are no set emotions, stages or timescales.

Someone may not be reacting in the way you expect. But there’s no right or wrong way to grieve.

“It’s so important to respect people’s boundaries and individual experiences during periods of grief." - Marie-Claire Mulcahy, Marie Curie Bereavement Service Coordinator.
