💊 Poisons Prevention💊

Did you know suspected poisoning is one of the most common reasons children attend A&E each year.

Even from as early as 6 months babies are developing and exploring by putting things in their mouth.

Although medicine caps are ‘child resistant’ they are not ‘child proof’ and children as young as 3 can open them. So it’s always best to keep them locked away.

Think about when you visit friends/ family and what medications could be left at bedside tables, handbags that little hands could get hold of.

Teach children to not pick and eat anything from outside. Berries can definitely look tempting and look very similar to the ones they eat at breakfast.

There’s some great tips on this fact sheet from the

🥵 HIGH TEMPERATURES IN CHILDREN 🥵

High temperatures (fevers) in children are really common, especially alongside a cough/ cold, D&V & chickenpox etc.

It’s your body’s natural response to an illness.

A temperature is above 38c

You can check if your child has a temperature by using a thermometer or they may:
🥵 Feel warm on their back or chest
🥵 Look unwell
🥵 Feel sweaty or look flushed

So how can you help?

🥵Make sure to give them lots of fluids
🥵 Keep them in light layers
🥵 Do not sponge them down or give cold baths…this will only cool them on the outside
🥵 Put a fan directly onto them
🥵 Give paracetamol or ibuprofen if they are unwell and distressed with the temperature

❗️❗️REMEMBER❗️❗️

🛑 Do not give paracetamol under 2 months
🛑 Do not give ibuprofen under 3 months
🛑 Do not give ibuprofen if your child has chickenpox or asthma unless a Dr has advised too
🛑 Always follow the dosing instructions on the packet

When to seek medical advice

🆘 If your child has a rash and high temperature
🆘 If the temperature has lasted more than 3 days
🆘 If your child seems distressed/ unwell
🆘 They appear dehydrated
🆘 If your baby is under 3 months with a temperature
🆘 If the temperature is not reducing despite medication
🆘 If you are worried

Sometimes it may be necessary to call 999 if the child has
🆘 Had a seizure
🆘 Is struggling to breathe
🆘 Has neck stiffness, sensitivity to light or a headache
🆘 A rash that doesn’t disappear (the glass test)
🆘 Is not responding as usual

This is such a brilliant tool with so much excellent information. As a parent it can be so worrying when your child is unwell, particularly this time of year when there’s so many bugs around. But having this symptom checker on hand is so reassuring and informative. Have a look!!

🔋BUTTON BATTERY WARNING 🔋

We’ve all heard the dangers of button batteries but did you know many toys have them in, including remote control toys, fidget toys and LED lights.

This year in all the chaos, wrapping paper everywhere, over excited children, why not take a moment to check the toys!

The problem with button batteries is not usually due to leaking but because the battery itself reacts with bodily fluids such as saliva and mucous causing an alkali substance to create a circuit therefore then burning the tissue.

Symptoms may be vague and may not happen immediately but could include:
🔋Generally unwell
🔋Coughing
🔋Vomiting blood
🔋Abdominal pain
🔋Bloody stools

To a child they look interesting, possibly sweet like so if your child swallows a battery:

🔋Take them to A&E immediately

🔋Do not give them anything to eat and drink or try and make them sick

🔋Try and identify the type of battery swallowed.

To help keep children safe:

🔋Keep new batteries in the packets out of the reach of children

🔋Dispose of old batteries immediately, do not keep them in a pile. They should be disposed of in battery disposal bins usually found in supermarkets

🔋Buy toys from reputable sites who have passed safety regulations

🔋Tape batteries in on toys, fobs and watches and where possible keep away from children.

💡💡LETS LIGHT UP THE DARK DAYS!💡💡

On my way to work recently I have seen so many people on bikes, wearing dark clothes, no helmets and no lights! This has included grown ups and teenagers on their morning paper rounds!

So I want to Light up the Dark Days, promote everyone riding safely and think about
‘Can I be seen and Can I be heard!’

💡 Always wear a helmet

💡Make sure you have lights on the front and back of your bike.

💡Always wear a Hi Vis Jacket over your clothes.

💡Have a bell so pedestrians and drivers can hear you coming.

💡Use reflective tape on your pedals and helmet.

💡Don’t wear headphones whilst using your bike.

💙💙💙 WORLD DIABETES DAY💙💙💙

Dedicated to my strong and brave sister who is inspiration to any child and family who has just got the diagnoses of diabetes…diabetes is very much a manageable condition and your life can be full, long and very very happy!!

Type 1 diabetes is where your body no longer produces an important hormone called insulin and this needs to be replaced.

So some common symptoms of diabetes type 1 include:

💙Increased thirst, not being able to quench your thirst. Your child may ask for more drinks.

💙Increased toileting, going to the toilet in the night. Bed wetting from a previously dry child. Very heavy nappies.

💙 Feeling very tired and lethargic

💙Weightloss, looking thinner.

💙Irritability, mood swings, behaviour changes.

💙Fruity smelling breath

If you notice any of these changes always see doctor.

Type 1 diabetes is non curable but advances in blood sugar monitoring and insulin delivery make it much easier to manage the condition.
