You can’t do it all!

Well, you could, but at what cost?

Recently, I found the limit of what I can do as a person. Family, housework, work, extra clients, projects, as well as pushing myself in the gym and then playing more golf than ever….

My knee said ‘no’.

Strange to admit an injury as a physio, but I share this in the hope it helps someone else realise they might be striving for too much in too many areas at one time.

I’ll be back, but what I learn is the most inportsnt thing…..

- there is only a priority, NOT priorities
- I only have a limited resource of time and energy
- as I get older, my body can’t tolerate what it used to!

If this message helps one person….

I was recently asked to deliver a presentation on recovery after surgery and illness or a charity group that is close to my heart.

In 2010, my sister had an operation and needed chest physio afterwards. As she was young and healthy, the ward physio missed hers so we did it together.

Fast forward to 2022 and she was recovering from Covid and struggling to return to the gym. So, we created a plan based on what we did with athletes and players using your vital signs like heart rate and RPE.

After the session, a women approached me and said ‘I had surgery 3 weeks ago and didn’t know this. I’ve already been practicing and it’s helped already!’

Had a patient bring Akusoli insoles to my attention, which are appearing all over social media for plantar fasciitis, so I did a deep dive...........

- Mixed reviews: some love the foot relief, others report billing issues and poor fit.

- Strong claims about pain relief, but little clinical evidence behind magnetic therapy.

- My advice? Treat it like an experiment — start small and check payment terms carefully. It is VERY rare that anything is a 'cure' for pain, so please tread carefully (pun intended!)

Disclaimer: - Not medical advice. Opinions are my own. Do your own research.

Sooooooo much more than a game of throw and catching!

I recently had the pleasure of working with a small group in Wilmslow.

They all wanted to get fitter, feel more confident and improve their walking, oh, and have music on!

We created a routine that was challenging in multiple ways; Here’s how I use throwing and catching to challenge them:-

- visual training (always scanning for a ball)
- postural control (throwing a ball without falling)
- displacing centre of gravity (reaching to the floor to pick balls up)
- reactivity (reflexes are significantly quicker than we can think!)
- fun! The nervous system lights up when something is fun, this is a foundation of building confidence.

After a 16 week programme, 100% of participants reported achieving their goals, with one participant ditching her walking stick as a result.

Not bad for an average age of 82!

Watch till the end for the best catch I ever caught on camera……

I recently made the difficult decision to stop working with an insurance provider.

The conflict between the level of service that I want to provide, and the restrictions put in place by the provider was too great.

This might seem like a strange decision for a new business. However, I am determined to provide the level of care and attention to detail that is required to deliver the highest standard of rehabilitation.

I have attached an exert from the company describing the limitations. These include ongoing physiotherapy services considered to be maintenance. Not aiming for pain-free, and does not include returning to sports training, which in one case included running a marathon.

I was genuinely touched to receive a thoughtful Google review this week. It’s always rewarding to hear that the care and...

I was genuinely touched to receive a thoughtful Google review this week. It’s always rewarding to hear that the care and attention we put into rehabilitation is being felt on the other side.
