Send this to a friend who needs to stop guessing.

Doctor or physio? Most people pick based on habit, not on what their body actually needs.

The right answer depends on what’s going on. Some conditions need to be ruled out medically before you start rehabbing. Knowing the difference saves you months of the wrong treatment.

Save this if back pain keeps coming back no matter what you try 👇

Stretching gives relief. But relief is not recovery.
Most people spend months chasing tightness without ever asking why the tightness is there in the first place. Your body isn’t broken. It’s being cautious. And cautious muscles don’t respond to force, they respond to trust.
The shift happens when you stop fighting what your body is doing and start working with it.
That’s when things actually change.

Follow for movement education that goes beyond the surface. 👆

Save this if your hips still feel tight no matter how much you stretch. 🔖

Because the problem usually isn’t your flexibility.
It’s your nervous system.

When movement feels unsafe, your body adds stiffness.
That’s protective tension and stretching alone doesn’t fix it.

Here’s what actually works:

Step 1 — Find the release first
Before adding range, let the body ease out of guard mode. Force less. Signal safety more.

Step 2 — Build control through the range
Once tension drops, train the muscles to own that space, not just visit it.

Step 3 — Then load and progress it
Now the range is yours. Add resistance. Add variation. Build resilience.

Stretching changes the feeling.
Movement training changes the system.

That’s why tight hips keep coming back after stretching, and why this physiotherapy-informed approach changes things for good.

Pain changes everything.

7 years with England Women's Rugby, including a World Cup win, taught me that the nervous system is more powerful than we give it credit for.

The fastest way out of pain isn't always the obvious one.

Save this before your next long run 👇
Marathon prep? You can't just run more.
Running is thousands of single-leg landings under fatigue. If your body can't control that, mileage becomes a fast track to injury.
These are the non-negotiables:

Split squats: build control
Carries: build endurance
Step-downs: prepare you for impact

Transfer load well. Control your trunk under fatigue. Tolerate the miles.
Run more, but prepare better.

Save this if squatting deep feels impossible 👇
You can't squat deep? Here's why.
Most people blame tight hips and stretch more. But depth doesn't come from mobility alone. It comes from control.
These are the 3 foundations you're skipping:

A stable foot base
Organised hip movement
A pattern your body actually trusts

When those are in place, depth stops feeling forced and starts feeling natural.
Depth = options + control. Not flexibility.
Follow for more movement tips that actually make sense. 👆

One week from today, former LAM Action Trustee Harriet Davidson will embark on an extraordinary physical and personal challenge to raise awareness and funds for LAM Action.

She has been following a punishing training schedule in all weathers in preparation for running four marathons back-to-back over four consecutive days this month, between February 25 and 28, which will take her from her home city of Bristol to her husband Adam’s hometown of Salisbury.

"I want to show that even with a rare lung disease, you can still push yourself and achieve incredible things,” said Harriet, who was diagnosed with LAM in 2019. "This challenge is about raising awareness, supporting other women with LAM, and contributing to vital research that could save lives."

She will be running with her husband Adam and best friend Lauren Weetch, and her mother Mary in a support car behind. Starting in Keynsham, Bristol, through Somerset, Frome, Trowbridge, Westbury, Warminster, across Salisbury Plain, before finishing outside Salisbury Cathedral.

"Having my mum in the support car will be such a boost,” Harriet said. “Running with my husband is fantastic - he is my rock! And knowing my mum is cheering us on behind the route will make it even more special."

The marathon challenge is filled with symbolic significance, beginning on February 25, Harriet and Adam’s wedding anniversary, and ending on February 28, International Rare Disease Day.

A unique feature of the challenge is that Harriet’s route will be tracked via GPS to spell out “LAM,” highlighting the disease and raising awareness for the charity.

Good luck from us all Harriet, you are amazing!

Save this if you train, move, or have ever dealt with knee pain 🦵
Rehab 🤝 Training: your knee needs BOTH
Same body. Different intention.

Rehab = slow, controlled, alignment-focused
Training = loaded, tempo, fatiguing

One gets you out of pain.
The other keeps you out of it.

Most people stop at rehab.
That's why the pain keeps coming back.
You don't graduate FROM rehab.
You evolve it into training.

Rehab without training = temporary relief
Training without rehab = recurring injury

The goal was never one or the other.
It's rehab, THEN training. 🔁

Follow for more knee rehab and training tips that actually keep you out of pain. 👆

Balance matters.

What’s sustainable for your body long term?

11/07/2025

You can’t do it all!

Well, you could, but at what cost?

Recently, I found the limit of what I can do as a person. Family, housework, work, extra clients, projects, as well as pushing myself in the gym and then playing more golf than ever….

My knee said ‘no’.

Strange to admit an injury as a physio, but I share this in the hope it helps someone else realise they might be striving for too much in too many areas at one time.

I’ll be back, but what I learn is the most inportsnt thing…..

- there is only a priority, NOT priorities
- I only have a limited resource of time and energy
- as I get older, my body can’t tolerate what it used to!

If this message helps one person….

I was recently asked to deliver a presentation on recovery after surgery and illness or a charity group that is close to my heart.

In 2010, my sister had an operation and needed chest physio afterwards. As she was young and healthy, the ward physio missed hers so we did it together.

Fast forward to 2022 and she was recovering from Covid and struggling to return to the gym. So, we created a plan based on what we did with athletes and players using your vital signs like heart rate and RPE.

After the session, a women approached me and said ‘I had surgery 3 weeks ago and didn’t know this. I’ve already been practicing and it’s helped already!’
