Why is supination so important?

Turning the palm up — is essential for tasks like feeding, dressing, and play. But for children with hemiplegia, it’s often a movement that’s weak, tight, or compensated for with awkward postures. That’s why we try to focus on it in therapy!

Swipe through to see what supination looks like, why it matters, and how we train it using fun, play-based activities

💻 Want to learn how to help your child at home?
Our Supination Module available on the Helping Hemi Hands website walks you through everything — from understanding the movement to games, strategies, and video demos you can use right away.

As parents, you want to give your child every chance to grow, move with confidence, and live as independently as possible 🌟

That’s why a specialised Intensive Upper Limb Therapy Program has been developed specifically for children with hemiplegia to support them in reaching their fullest potential.

What to Expect
✅ Constraint Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT): During CIMT, your child’s dominant arm is placed in a cast to encourage use of the hemiplegic arm. This approach provides the opportunity for repetitive practice of unimanual movements and actions, promoting neuroplastic changes and reducing secondary musculoskeletal impairments.
✅ Bimanual Therapy: Bimanual therapy helps children develop the skills needed for two handed tasks by encouraging specific actions and behaviors through repetitive, goal oriented play activities.

Wondering what happens in a Early Detection and Developmental Play Assessment?

During the assessment, we carefully observe your child’s movements, and how they interact with their environment.

We use specialist outcome measures the HINE and the HAI to detect signs of neurological impairment and asymmetric development and with that the possibility of cerebral palsy.

This helps us understand their development and create personalised support tailored just for them and for you as a family.

We can then provide a home or in clinic treatment program - including one of our custom made soft mitt’s if appropriate.

✨ Our early detection service offers comprehensive assessments to identify any potential neurological concerns and equip you with strategies to support your baby’s development. ✨

When we talk about gross motor skills in CIMT, we mean helping your child move their hemiplegic arm. This is the first skill we focus on, starting from any movement at all, to placing the arm in a specific position at a specific time.

Children with hemiplegia often neglect their affected side, so building awareness of the arm is key. We use:
✨ Messy Play
✨ Massage & Sensory Stimulation

Repetition is crucial for movement - but it also needs to be fun and achievable! 🎉

Here are some great gross motor activities to try:
🔹 Knocking over towers
🔹 Pressing toys or switches
🔹 Action songs

Starting off with really easy and achievable positions is the key to this. Do something they can already achieve with this arm and then very gradually make it harder by morning it further away from the arm.

You can also support the movement by helping initially to ensure success.

Velcro food, threading beads, stirring in bowls - it all counts!

This month inside the Helping Hemi Hands membership, we’re focusing on bimanual therapy - that’s getting both hands working together in everyday play.

Simple activities like pulling apart Velcro food, holding a bowl steady while stirring, threading beads, or opening containers are brilliant ways to encourage coordinated hand use. These playful moments aren’t just fun - they build essential skills that help your child gain independence and confidence.

Small steps, big progress - and always with both hands on board.
