If you’re lining up speakers for your next NHS conference, masterclass or workshop, a session on helping staff de-frazzle their NHS roles could be worth considering.

The NHS can be a challenging place to work, so giving staff the tools and techniques to support them in reducing stress and overwhelm can only be a good thing.

The illustration below shows what I can cover if you decide to invite me along, but here’s a snapshot of why this topic is so important:
👉High levels of stress are associated with errors that can harm patient care, and in the acute sector it is associated with higher levels of mortality. (Michael West)
👉Chronic work stress is associated with cardiovascular disease, hypertension, heart attacks, addictions, cancer, diabetes, and more severe mental health problems including depression. (Michael West).
👉In the NHS the most reported reason for sickness absence is anxiety, stress, depression, and other psychiatric illnesses. (NHS Digital)

The NHS has an amazing dedicated workforce. Caring for staff wellbeing is key to maintaining the exceptional work they do every day.

Here’s my accountability week 44.

I have done several lovely things this week, but unfortunately, they have been overshadowed by lots of small stressors, so I’m left feeling less than recharged.

It made me think of this post I wrote last year, where the message is that we should never underestimate the impact of microstressors, and we should intentionally focus on removing them if we want to reduce stress in our lives.

Hoping this coming week will be better!
