WORLD STROKE DAY

Every year, 12 million people experience a stroke. That's one every two seconds.

Stroke can happen suddenly, and without warning.

Stroke cuts off the supply of blood and oxygen to the brain. Every minute it goes untreated, millions of cells die. The longer the time gap, the more likely people are to be left with long-term brain damage that affects their ability to walk talk and manage everyday tasks on their own.

The sad truth is that 1 in every 2 people who experience a stroke will die from it. For those that survive, two thirds are left facing complications and long-term disabilities.

Knowing how to spot the signs of stroke and raising the alert is an essential first step that can help make sure people get the treatment they need, fast.

This doesn't just save lives, it increases the chance of a full recovery so that stroke survivors can go on to live their best life.

Every Minute Counts. Learn to spot the signs of stroke today.

Most pharmacies can offer prescription medicine for some conditions, without you needing to see a GP or make an appointment. This is called Pharmacy First.

Conditions they can offer prescription medicine for are:

impetigo (aged 1 year and over)
infected insect bites (aged 1 year and over)
earache (aged 1 to 17 years)
sore throat (aged 5 years and over)
sinusitis (aged 12 years and over)
urinary tract infections (UTIs) (women aged 16 to 64 years)
shingles (aged 18 years and over)
If you are not within these age ranges, a pharmacist can still offer advice and support decisions about self care treatment with over the counter medicines, but you may need to see a GP for treatment or refer you to other health professional if needed. They will also update your GP health record, but your information will not be shared with anyone else.

Most pharmacies can provide prescription medicine for these conditions but contact them before visiting to check.

From October to March we can’t make enough vitamin D from sunlight, so to keep bones and muscles healthy, it’s best to take a daily 10 microgram supplement of vitamin D. You can get vitamin D from most pharmacies and retailers.

🚭 October is Stoptober - your chance to take control of your health and quit smoking for good 💪🔥

Whether you've quit, started again, or switched to vaping, it’s vital to let your doctor know. Why? Because smoking directly affects the treatment and management of long-term conditions like:
❤️ Coronary heart disease (CHD)
🦵 Peripheral arterial disease (PAD)
🧠 Stroke or TIA
💉 High blood pressure (hypertension)
🩸 Type 2 diabetes
🫁 COPD and asthma (in adults)
💭 History of psychosis, schizophrenia or bipolar disorder
🚰 Chronic kidney disease (CKD)

Your smoking status plays a big role in your care plan. Don’t keep it to yourself - tell your GP.

💬 Want to quit? Help is out there:
👉 Speak to your GP
👉 Call the NHS Smokefree Helpline 0300 123 1044
👉 Or visit: https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/quit-smoking/nhs-stop-smoking-services-help-you-quit/

Every day smoke-free is a win 🏆

Pharmacists do so much more than dispense medicines. They offer expert health advice, help manage long-term conditions, provide vaccinations, and guide you on safe, effective treatments. 💊

This year, let’s celebrate the vital role they play in keeping our communities healthy — often as the first point of care.
