March is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month - but one local survivor has called for greater understanding of the condition which affects 7,500 women in the UK every year.

Ovarian cancer most commonly affects women over the age of 50, but ovarian cancer can affect women of all ages.

One in four women mistakenly think their smear test will detect the disease.

Symptoms are often mistaken for less serious conditions like IBS. Please seek medical advice especially when symptoms are visible.

The National Cancer Plan for England, launched on World Cancer Day in February 2026, is a key part of the government's 10-Year Health Plan, aiming to save 320,000 lives by 2035 and increase the five-year survival rate to 75%. The plan focuses on four main areas: earlier detection, access to advanced treatments, prevention, and reducing inequalities, particularly in working-class communities.
