Today is Earth Day, which means it’s the perfect time to explore earthing (otherwise known as grounding) to deepen our connection with the world around us.

The Earth is the source of life for everything that lives and breathes; while tapping into the energy of the Universe helps elevate us on a spiritual level, we must remember that our physical health and wellbeing requires constant contact with the Earth, and it’s really important to maintain a healthy balance between these two sources of energy.

Earthing is about finding a stable connection with the strength of the Earth. The first Chakra, Muladhara, is located at the base of the spine and is responsible for grounding our central nervous system; this is the root, the foundation of our whole energy system and, when aligned, helps clear any spiritual blockages.

Meditation is an ideal way of forging this connection with the Earth - visualise yourself as a beautiful tree that takes root deep in the soil and, whilst inhaling, imagine this grounding energy permeating up through the roots and into your whole body; allow any negative or unhelpful emotions to leave your body through the roots and back into the Earth whilst exhaling.

Other techniques to promote grounding include -

- walking barefoot in nature to deepen direct contact with the Earth; walk mindfully and take deep breaths of the clean air around you,

- planting flowers or bushes with your bare hands rather than using tools; really feel the dirt between your fingers,

- eating root vegetables planted in the earth such as cabbage, carrots, celery and potato, making sure to eat consciously,

- engaging in physical activities such as running, dancing or swimming; restorative Yoga is also extremely grounding,

- considering your sexual energy with a focus on connection rather than release,

- booking a foot massage; this stimulates energy channels and encourages an exchange of energy with the Earth,

- taking a warm bath with natural salts to cleanse and replenish energy,

- surrounding yourself with dark-coloured crystals like quartz, rhinestone and volcanic lava rock ; these crystals represent the Earth element and harmonise the Root Chakra,

- listening to a gong bath over a sound bath for an earthier experience,

If you've been feeling disconnected or out-of-sorts lately, grounding may be for you; I offer a Thai Foot Massage (£45 for 45 minutes) via Fika Massage and Reiki and a Guided Forest Meditation (£30 for 45 minutes) via Lotus Yoga and Meditation, both of which are designed to promote restoration and connection.

A £10 discount is applicable if both treatments are booked together in one session ✨✨

Struggling to shift out of hibernation mode? Feeling lethargic, sleepy, unmotivated..?

It sometimes feels like Winter will last forever, the cold days and dark nights forcing us to wrap up warm, stay inside and go in on ourselves, the torrential rain and howling winds forcing us to slow down and be still.

It’s hard to shake off this sluggish feeling when Spring finally arrives after what feels like an eternity of grey skies; the sun’s rays start shining through a break in the clouds, the flowers slowly start to bloom and birdsong returns to our ears, but still we feel exhausted, quiet, lacking energy…

I provide a Guided Beach Meditation to help refresh a tired mind and give your nervous system a much-needed energy boost; these 1:1 sessions encourage feelings of warmth and rejuvenation with a focus on promoting vitality and a sense that you can achieve anything you put your mind to.

If you need a helping hand to step into the sun and leave behind the cold of the last few months, please send me a message via my page or e-mail me at lotus.yoga.meditation@hotmail.com.

One of the main things my amazing clients often share with me is that they never get any time to themselves; either they’re running around looking after the kids, doing chores, juggling a career or generally looking after everyone else, leaving no time to consider their own needs amongst the constant demands on their time.

They often comment how much they’d love to just stay and rest for an hour or so after their treatment before returning home to the chaos..

I wanted to create a space where overworked and exhausted women, who don’t have the space or opportunity in their own homes to grab five minutes of peace without being called upon, can come and rest, relax and recharge in my cosy and comfortable therapy room in Butleigh, Somerset.

‘Quiet Time’ sessions are available to book from April onwards in which you can stay and rest for half an hour after treatments if you’d like to prolong that feeling of pure relaxation (£5); alternatively, you are welcome to book standalone sessions of undisturbed peace and quiet for an hour or two (£10 per hour) for deeper restoration.

This is a space of solitude where you can breathe, rest, sleep, read, listen to music or meditate; there are no demands on your time, no tasks to complete, no-one needing your attention and certainly no rushing around… just time for you to slow down and be still.

If you would like to book some long-overdue time for yourself, please send me a message via my page or e-mail me at lotus.yoga.meditation@hotmail.com to secure your space ✨✨

When we're feeling anxious, we tend to engage in chest breathing which disrupts our oxygen and carbon dioxide levels; this leads to an increased heart rate, dizziness, muscle tension and other uncomfortable sensations.

In these moments, we need to instead focus on diaphragmatic breathing in order to reduce our stress and anxiety, enhance mental clarity and promote relaxation. This method also improves oxygen delivery, lowers heart rate and blood pressure and supports digestive health.

To regulate our parasympathetic nervous system, try 'box breathing' - visualise a square as you breathe in four equal parts: inhale - hold - exhale - hold.

Start by inhaling deeply through your nose for a count of 4, then hold your breath for a count of 4.

Exhale slowly and completely through your mouth for a count of 4, then again hold your breath for a count of 4.

Repeat this cycle several times, maintaining a steady and controlled rhythm.

This technique encourages a state of calm and balance, and can be easily utilised during moments of overwhelm ✨✨

My name is Catherine and I am a qualified Meditation Teacher, having gained my Diploma from Gateway Workshops in 2024.

I am registered with the Guild of Holistic Therapists, and am based from my therapy room in Butleigh, Somerset, where I specialise in women’s wellbeing.

We often get so swept up in the complexities and frustrations of everyday life that we tend to become overwhelmed and neglect our self-care, leaving us feeling restless, anxious and sometimes chaotic; this further creates a sense of disconnection with nature, the most grounding environment for our nervous system.

My Guided Forest Meditation encourages a return to nature by immersing you in a meditative visualisation through woodlands; this is the perfect opportunity to earth and centre your nervous system as it aids relaxation of a busy mind and promotes sensations of connection and restoration.

The woody aroma of palo santo is integrated into this treatment to enhance your meditative forest experience and to welcome positive healing energy into your being.

This treatment is £30 for 45 minutes; please send me a message via my page or e-mail me at lotus.yoga.meditation@hotmail.com to book this grounding treatment ✨✨
