We recently celebrated a vibrant and meaningful Chinese New Year Culture Day here at The Wharf, bringing colour, More...Creativity, and cultural exploration to our residents across the home.
In the lead up to the day, residents worked incredibly hard together to create their very own Chinese dragon. This was a wonderful group activity that encouraged creativity, teamwork, and reminiscence, with many residents sharing memories of past celebrations, festivals and crafts they had enjoyed throughout their lives. Seeing the finished dragon on display was a real moment of pride for everyone involved.
The highlight of the day was our lively Dragon Dance, where residents enjoyed watching the dragon come to life around the home. There was lots of laughter, smiles and engagement as the dragon made its way through the lounges, creating a joyful and inclusive atmosphere.
Food tasting was also a big part of the cultural experience. Residents had the opportunity to try spring rolls served with sweet chilli and sweet and sour dipping sauces, which proved to be a huge hit and were thoroughly enjoyed. We also offered traditional jasmine tea as part of the cultural theme. Whilst the jasmine tea was less popular with some residents due to its delicate flavour, it sparked lovely conversations about different cultures, tastes, and traditions.
Throughout the day, we incorporated reminiscence, sensory experiences and cultural learning in a calm and dementia-friendly way, ensuring all residents could participate at their own pace and comfort level.
It was a fantastic day of culture, creativity and community spirit, and a wonderful opportunity for residents to try something new, share memories and celebrate together. A big well done to our residents for their hard work on the dragon and for fully embracing the celebrations.
