Trigger warning, this post includes mentions of su***de.

Hormonal changes can have a profound impact on mental health – affecting mood, confidence, emotional stability and, for some women, feelings of hopelessness or suicidal thoughts.

Yet so many women we see in clinic have had these symptoms dismissed or misattributed.

Newson Research, in collaboration with Liverpool John Moores University, analysed data from 957 Newson Clinic patients experiencing psychological symptoms, with 1 in 6 reporting suicidal thoughts. Following hormone treatment, over 90% reported an improvement in suicidal thoughts.

These findings highlight the important role of hormones in mental health – and the impact that the right, individualised treatment can have.

At Newson Clinic, we provide individualised, evidence-based care and treatment that recognises the role of oestradiol, progesterone and testosterone in both mental and physical health. With the right assessment and treatment, many of our patients experience meaningful improvements in their symptoms – just like we can see here.

We spoke to four of our Newson clinicians at the recent Newson Education conference and asked them one simple question: what do you wish all women knew about hormone health?

Women’s hormone health is still too often misunderstood, with misinformation making it difficult to know what’s accurate, what’s safe and what options are available.

In this video, our clinicians share one key thing they believe every woman should understand – from the age that women can experience hormone symptoms to the importance of testosterone for women.

In this week’s episode of the Dr Louise Newson podcast, Dr Louise is joined by model and author Rosie Viva, who speaks openly about her experience of living with bipolar disorder and her journey to diagnosis.

Together, they explore the challenges many women face when their symptoms are misunderstood, why bipolar disorder is often missed in women, and how stigma and lack of awareness can leave many feeling unsupported.

Hormonal changes can also have a significant impact on mental health with many symptoms overlapping with anxiety and depression, yet this is not always recognised in diagnosis or treatment.

At Newson Clinic, we regularly see women experiencing symptoms such as mood changes, anxiety and depression and with the right type and dose of natural hormones, so many experience meaningful improvements in their symptoms. In fact, 1 in 2 of our patients reported their feelings of depression improved after three months of hormone treatment.*

Our clinicians take the time to listen, understand your symptoms and create personalised treatment plans based on your individual needs, medical history and future health goals.

Our clinicians see patients everyday who describe how they feel unlike themselves - overwhelmed, less confident, struggling to think clearly - without knowing why.

After a consultation at Newson Clinic, they often state their relief of ‘finally being listened to’. And with the right type and dose of hormones, many women notice improvements in mood, focus and overall quality of life.

The impact of hormone changes can be far-reaching and at Newson Clinic, we treat the whole person - not just the isolated symptoms.

What’s one change you’ve noticed in your mood, energy or mindset recently that you can’t quite explain that you think could be hormonal? If you’re comfortable, let us know in the comments.

At Newson Clinic, our expert clinicians often speak to women who feel unsure about HRT due to concerns around breast cancer.

But not all HRT is the same and much of the fear comes from older studies using synthetic hormones.

Current evidence shows that body-identical hormones are not associated with an increased risk in the same way, and the type of progesterone used is important.

We see lots of women who have an increased risk of breast cancer but want their hormone-related symptoms treated. When you come for your appointment, we always take time to understand your individual risk, listen to your symptoms and medical history and create a personalised treatment plan that’s right for you.

In the latest episode of the Dr Louise Newson podcast, Dr Louise is joined by consultant psychiatrist Dr Gareth Jarvis to explore the often-overlooked link between hormones, inflammation and mental health.

The most common and severe symptoms of fluctuating and declining hormones according to our patients are associated with their mood and mental health* and at Newson Clinic, our clinicians see the impact of this every day.

With the right type and dose of hormones symptoms can significantly improve – and can also lower the risk of diseases such as cardiovascular disease, dementia and osteoporosis as Dr Louise touches on here.
