A little inspiration hung at the top of the stairs. For every training session that doesn't go to plan, having this picture there will always keep the dream alive! Although I did catch Verity sat at the top of the stairs just staring at it, one proud little jockey with her unicorn..

When mummy takes the photo too early, we get left with seeing just how high the jumps are in comparison to Blue 😱
I've never been much of a jump rider, and I can be quoted recently in saying that I will only jump whatever height Verity jumps, but now I think she is starting to out jump me 😂 She is doing well considering there isn't much pony under her, let alone anything at all in front of her.
Plus the hot topic of today, at what point does she stick her tongue out... Pretty much from take off!

Well the right rein sure is tighter after hitting the eject button yesterday 😂
A good half an hour spent learning all about leg yielding and actually not making too bad a job of it, they then worked on some walk to canter transitions. As far as Verity was aware it was all top notch race training, but actually, it was the principles of dressage and ensuring that she is striking off on the correct canter lead, and something to apply to her jumping too with landing on the correct canter leads.
Always plenty to learn, and with the promise of a whizz around the big field afterwards to look forward too, they both gave the flatwork their best efforts.

Ha, Verity took a tumble over the tiny cross poles 🫢
I've been nagging her for a while now that her right rein keeps creeping longer, and there are only so many times that I can keep on about it, so I gave her an exercise that required a good and consistent rein length, and handed it over to Blue to teach the lesson.
He didn't disappoint, he hit the eject button as he ducked left for the easy option and she had nothing in her hand to hold him straight 😂 and out the door she went.
Then when she had quite finished messing about in the dirt, she got to open him up round the field and crank the jumps up to a more respectable height.
Months ago this would have set her back in her confidence, but now she uses it to fuel her determination, hopefully the lesson in equal rein length has now successfully been taught 😂

It's all fun and games, but walking on different surfaces is so important for the animals, they have to be comfortable on surfaces with usual textures, patterns and gradients. Taking the time to get it right now sets them up for a successful therapy sheep career.

You learn to ride, but actually, learning isn't what you really do at all, it's about developing the connection, the feeling, and it comes with time, patience and commitment. Verity has always dabbled with a little lunging, long reining and even carriage driving (nobody panic, Noodles might be back on the therapy team, and although he is aging like a fine wine he is absolutely not going back in harness!), but she usually spends her time in the saddle. Now that she only has one pony to ride, she has some spare time on her hands to develop her 'out of the saddle' Horsemanship skills further.
Noodles loves a lunge, and he is so switched on, his commands are water tight, which makes him super hard to lunge if you don't speak the same language as he does, he will change the rein if you turn your feet, put your arm out and he will shoulder in to the middle, he canters on a word, and halts with a single Woah, sometimes just breathing out is enough to stop him. Verity likes to skip some stages of the of the scales of training, so this is a stark reminder of taking her time to develop every level. She was adamant that she could jump Noodles on the lunge, but had a rude awakening that the perfect boy isn't a mind reader, and she has to put some work in, and do it his way!
Horses for Courses, they truly are the best teachers!

It's good to be back, not just with the therapy team being in the final stages of planning - our inspection date is the 31st of march, and I can't wait to get the animal team out visiting again. But it's great to be back on the page too, it had got a little quiet on here. I love being back on the farm full-time, with all the shenanigans and adventures that make me smile, fuelling this page to share that joy worldwide. There is nothing more joyful than Oliver falling off Donk 🤣😂🤣

Our Story

Pony Pals is a team of miniature horses and a donkey who make therapy visits to nursing homes / hospices / community centres and hospitals. The ponies are house trained, insured and licensed to work inside and trained to use the lift. They can also be booked to entertain the children at birthday parties. We also have the wonderful little miracle workers that are The Guinea Pig Gang, these little critters make up a group of 8 and have varying colours and coat textures. They are also available for their own therapy visits, they have a transport house on wheels so we are fully mobile, and sit beautifully on little lap trays for the residents to enjoy them. New for 2021 we will have The Chicken Chums joining the therapy visit options. The new recruits are a variety of small chicken breeds and are currently training to also sit quietly on laps to be stroked and chattered too.

We are based in Liphook, Hampshire and travel up to an hour for our visits.

We are currently closed due to the coronavirus outbreak and look forward to visiting again in 2021.
