JAG's Fitness Blog 40 something girl that loves to eat meat and pick up heavy sh*t. Wannabe powerlifter. Coffee addict. I'm Jo aka JAG of JAG's Fitness Blog.

I started writing my blog way back in 2008 when I was a bit of a fatty. I used it to document my weight loss and gathered followers along the way who were interested in my progress. I've changed a lot over the course of the last few years, not just physically but mentally too. I've got over my previous food obsession and haven't binged in over 2 years, which is the longest I've ever gone. I now fast for at least 16 hours a day - every day - and I believe it is this that finally helped me to overcome my food obsessions and disordered eating. I eat a high fat diet and don't eat any grains except for white rice (coeliac disease). My carbs are cycled according to my training, with larger quantities consumed post workout and smaller quantities on resting days. My true passion is weight lifting. I have dreams of becoming a competitive power lifter and have set myself a goal to enter my first competition before summer 2014. At the moment (May 2013) I am being treated for thoracic outlet syndrome which I have been suffering with for the past 15 months. Once this is fixed, I can focus my training on getting much stronger. I'd love a 300kg total in my first competition. Though my above description may make me sound like a dude, I'm actually quite feminine - I love pampering myself and making myself look purdy. My hands may be full of callouses but my nails are always immaculate ;)

✨ August Round Up ✨

The month started off so well for me. I was hitting my training sessions consistently, sticking to macros, getting the steps in. I didn’t seem to be seeing any progress on the scales despite sticking to macros - I lost and regained the same 2lb for the whole of August so it’s time to recalculate and reduce intake a little - something I’ve not done since I started.

Unfortunately, the last week of the month was not a good week 😔

Following my excision surgery for endometriosis and pudendal nerve decompression, I was prescribed Pregabalin/Lyrica for the nerve pain whilst it was healing. I started off on a pretty high dose twice daily and although it massively helped with my pain levels, the cognitive effects of the medication were awful. I also saw a study that shows this type of medication can have permanent effects on cognitive function and can cause early onset dementia in the long term. So, I didn’t want to stay on it any longer than necessary.

Due to the nature of the medication and the effects on the brain, it’s not a drug that can be stopped suddenly. In fact, if suddenly stopped, it can cause seizures and psychosis. Terrifying right?

Over the past five months, under the guidance of my GP, I’ve been gradually reducing the medication until last week, when I finally stopped taking it.

Cue the most horrendous withdrawal side effects I’ve ever experienced in my life. Uncontrollable tremors and shaking, profuse sweating, severe agitation and anxiety, migraines, disorientation, nausea and insomnia. Despite being absolutely bone tired and exhausted, I COULD. NOT. SLEEP. I felt like a zombie.

Today is the first day where most of these symptoms have left me. I still have a bad head. I still feel a little disoriented at times and I’m still not sleeping very well but I’m managing to sleep at least, albeit it brokenly.

So my goals absolutely have not been met this month, but we’re going into a new week and a new month.

Weight loss: 0
Workouts: 11
Step count: 290,321
Miles walked: 126.22

Goals for September:

To beat these numbers.

✨ July Round-up ✨

I didn’t hit all of my goals in July 😩 but I’ll try again in August 😁

Goals I hit:

🔹Weight loss of 3lb: weight lost = 4lb ✅
🔹10kg on hip thrusts ✅
🔹5kg on RDLs ✅

Goals I did not hit:

🔹>417,000 steps - I got 342,432
🔹> 182 miles - I got 149.8
🔹14 gym sessions - I did 8

I was battling with a sprained wrist for a week which limited my gym workouts. Whilst that was still healing, I got flu and was bed bound for almost a week. But despite all that I’m really happy with what I achieved.

Goals for August:

🔹Beat this months step & mile count
🔹3lb weight loss
🔹12 gym sessions

Let’s do this 👊🏻

May update 📈

My goal was to hit 400,000 steps for the month which I sadly didn’t achieve 😩 In fact, I got my lowest step count for the last four months!

But now it’s June and I’ll try again 😇

The good news is I’m currently sitting 8.6lbs down with approximately 20lbs to go.

Goals for June:

10k steps per day
400,000k steps for the month
3 weight lifting sessions per week
3lb weight loss

February totals 🤩

Steps walked: 386,677
Miles walked: 168.97

Despite the month being two days shorter, I still managed to beat January’s totals.

I’m now four months post op and getting back into a routine with training. Workouts are going exceptionally well. Although I can’t train my lower body the way I normally do, I’m focussing on what I CAN do and making the most of it. I’m still managing to hit my legs and glutes pretty hard without flaring up my nerve which is amazing.

My upper body training is pretty much back to normal. Weights are back to what they were pre-op more or less so I’m very happy with that.

🔶Goals for March:

🔹Beat February step and mileage count
🔹Minimum 3 lifting sessions per week
🔹Aim for a 3lb weight loss
🔹More consistent tracking of food

My weight loss for February has been up and down, losing and re-gaining the same 2lb so I’ll be more consistent with weighing and tracking food. However, despite not losing any scale weight throughout February, my physique is definitely showing some changes.

Totals for January. I’m extremely happy with them even though my step count is about 30,000 down on previous years. However I’m only 3 months post op so to even have walked this much is fantastic.

Now my nerve pain seems to be settling my goal for February is to get back into a routine in the gym. Although my usual lower body workouts are out for the time being, there are certain exercises that I can do to maintain my strength and muscle until im fully recovered.

Weight is down by 6lb. Another 22 to go 🤩

Stats for the month so far:

Weight loss - 5.6lb
Total steps - 261,003
Miles walked - 114.71

I’m so happy with these figures as I’m only just 3 months post op 🤩

My return to work has been problematic unfortunately. Although physically I’m fit enough to be in work, since I’ve returned to every day, my nerve pain has flared up massively due to the amount of time I’m spending sitting. I’m back to just 5-6 hours per day whilst they try and sort my standing desk and once it’s in place I’ll be able to stand to relieve pressure.

Gym is on hold for the moment until my pain is better controlled. Due to the nature of my surgery and the length of the recovery, lower body workouts are no more 😭💔 but this just means I get to focus on other things, such as getting a badass upper body, working on my handstands and chin ups and getting my daily step count up.

Today’s activity 🤩

I woke at 5.10am to get to the gym before work. My routine is focussed on building up my strength again following my surgery. I also have a little bit of a strength imbalance on my left side following my nerve surgery so will be performing some single leg exercises to address that.

After the gym, I got ready and then walked to work. 10k steps hit by 10am 🙌🏻 I went for a walk during my lunch break, walked home after work and then went out for a walk with Emz as it was such a beautiful evening.

Weigh in today showed a 3lb loss in the last week, making it 7lb overall since December. I’m currently aiming for approx 1900 cals per day, with a goal of 120g protein as a minimum. I don’t track carbs or fat - they fall where they fall within my calorie intake.

My next workout is planned for Wednesday which will be upper body focussed. One of my main goals this year will be to get back to bodyweight chin ups so getting lighter will help with that.

Not sure how many people are still here and will see this but just checking in to say hi 🤩

It’s been a rough few years for me - multiple surgeries for deeply infiltrating endometriosis after struggling with chronic pain for the longest time. I finally got to have surgery with a proper excision specialist in October and now I’m recovered, I’m looking to get back to some regular gym workouts and healthy eating.

I’m on a quest to lose at least 20lbs and I’m hoping to document my journey here for anyone who might be interested.

The plan is as follows:

🔹 10,000 steps per day
🔹 3 weight lifting sessions per week
🔹 10-15% calorie deficit
🔹 prioritising protein at every meal
🔹 fruit and/or veg with every meal
🔹 pelvic floor stretching and relaxation every day
🔹 electrolytes every morning - hydrate before I caffeinate

It’s a tried and tested method for me to lose fat. No fad diets. No crazy restriction or super low calories. No cutting any good groups. Calories in vs calories out. Move more. And lift weights. Simple 🫶🏻
