Bean to Baby

Bean to Baby Antenatal education to empower and inspire.

Courses can be delivered as a group or on a one-to-one basis to suit your circumstances - all are run by a qualified midwife. CLASSES RUN ONLINE AND FACE-TO-FACE
A global pandemic shouldn’t mean you miss out on attending antenatal classes, with all the invaluable information they provide and their opportunities to make supportive new friends. Our sessions are run online by a midwife with years of experience in running antenatal groups and, when covid-19 restrictions are lifted, in the more traditional manner of face to face groups. INFORMATION TO EMPOWER YOU
Topics covered in the course include how best to prepare both yourself and your home for your new arrival, what to expect in the early stages of labour and how to manage when things get going... or don't go as you had hoped or planned, life in the first few days and weeks – feeding your baby, self care, babywearing benefits... and lots more besides! PERSONALISED OPTIONS AVAILABLE
If you have a unique set of circumstances or would simply prefer to receive the information on a 1-2-1 basis then that option is something we are proud to be able to provide. After a free, initial consultation to discuss the topics you would like covered, a course will be put together that ensures all YOUR information needs are met.

Happy New Year!

It’s been a while since a new Bean to Baby post… it turned out returning to work and juggling the “new normal” whilst also trying to run a newly set up business was just a bit too much to take on. Taking a step back from this was very much needed!

But it’s a new year, the normal is not so “new” any more and fresh interest in what we have to offer has been piqued, so now’s the time to sow the beans and nurture some growth.

Wishing everyone a happy, healthy and prosperous 2022… and if you’re expecting a lovely little Bean of your own this year then have a look at the website (link in bio) for more details on what Bean to Baby can offer you. 💚

Babywearing

👶 Keeping Baby close calms and relaxes them, resulting in up to 40% less crying

💜 Keeping baby close enough to smell and kiss increases your oxytocin release, making you feel happier and therefore more confident in your parenting abilities

🙌 If your little one would rather be cuddled all the time than put down, wearing them around the house gives you back the use of both you more independence

We cover more about the benefits of babywearing and how to access more information in our course - see our website (link in bio) for more details and to book.

Don’t forget YOU 💜

It’s the end of so time for a post with a few ideas of how to make sure you don’t slip through the gaps that can open up, chasm like, in your time & energy after having a baby...

👶 Keeping baby close in a sling or carrier means you can get on with your day with a bit more freedom, whilst Baby stays calmer and happier... they will even cry less! You can get 1:1 appointments in person and online for more information and advice on the best sling for you at your local sling library, which you can find on the website.

🤝 Don’t be afraid to reach out for help if you’re struggling. This past year has been one helluva challenge for everyone, but no more so than for parents. If you’re struggling by then there’s no shame is asking for support or even just a listening ear. And don’t forget: If you or your partner are finding life difficult then your health visitor and GP are there to help!

🛀 It’s completely fine - essential even - for you to put yourself first every now and again. The adage that “you can’t pour from an empty bucket” might be over used but that’s probably because it’s very true! Whether your relaxation is a good book, a soak in the tub, a long walk or a chat with your bestie, you ARE allowed to indulge... and you’ve definitely earned it!

❤️ Enjoy all the snuggles. Research shows that the longer you hug someone, the more oxytocin you release. This stabilises your autonomic systems (temperature, heart rate, breathing rate), calms you and even helps Baby’s brain to grow. There’s no downside, so snuggle them close to your hearts content (they won’t let you do it forever)!

Take care of yourselves, parents. You’re smashing it. 💪

☕️ ☕️ ☕️

After a disrupted night’s sleep (and throughout the rest of the day!) it’s tempting to reach for the caffeine for a quick boost, but if little one is having your breastmilk then it’s worth bearing in mind that Baby gets almost twice as much caffeine into their system than yours...

☕️ The half-life - that is, how long it takes for a substance to decrease by half - of caffeine in newborns is up to 4 DAYS!
This decreases to a few hours by the time your baby is 6 months old.

☕️ If your baby is struggling to settle for naps or at night then adjusting your caffeine intake (or cutting it out altogether) is worth a try... and if you end up with a withdrawal headache then the chances are you were consuming a tad too much anyway!

☕️ Remember: caffeine is also found in dark chocolate, green tea, energy drinks, some painkillers and cold remedies.

Make that tube of ni**le cream earn it’s keep!

🍉 Start using it from day 1, even if you’re not feeling any tenderness. Giving your ni**les some TLC in the early days will be well worth it in the long run!

🍉 Ni**le cream is not only good for your tender nips, but also for baby’s sore bottom and your dry knuckles - all that nappy changing can effect both of you!

🍉 If you’re using a lanolin based cream, warm the tube between your hands (or b***s!), or under your leg whilst feeding/pumping. This will help slacken it a bit and make it easier to apply.

🍉 If you’re using an oil based cream then don’t use as much as you think - a little goes a long way and you can always apply more!

Wonder Wednesday!

👀 This is a mind blowing fact!

✂️ Up to 30% of your baby’s circulating blood volume is in the cord & placenta at the moment of birth.

✂️ If you allow the blood to drain back to baby before the cord is cut then they’ll receive as much oxygen, nutrients, minerals, stem cells and iron as possible to give them the best start in life.

Don’t wipe off the baby frosting!

🧁 Whilst they’re in utero babies are covered in a thick greasy substance called vernix. This forms a protective barrier over their skin so they’re not too prune like when they land earthside - think of how wrinkly you are after a soak in the tub, let alone 9 months in a bath of warm water!

🧁 The longer your little cupcake is baked before they’re born, the less frosting they’ll have about their person. Don’t worry! This just means they’ve soaked it all back into their super soft skin.

🧁 If your baby does have a lot of vernix about them when they’re born, don’t wipe it off - it’s the world’s best natural moisturiser! Let it soak into all the nooks & crannies to help your baby’s sensitive skin adapt to all the chafing and rubbing that happens on a daily basis (clothes! nappies! towels!).
