The reality of the healing journey is that it can be a bit messy, not linear and really tough. With the right support, it can be manageable, may also be full of laughs and cries, and most likely be transformative.

It’s always nice to hear what a positive impact psychotherapy can have. Clients often underestimate their own input into the process that makes working together to achieve deeper awareness and healing all the more successful. 🙏🏻

When you're not understanding your behaviour or proportionality of response to others, take a moment to think about what's going underneath the surface.

Firstly, breathe and regulate.

Then ask yourself:
How much am I responding to what's happening in the moment?

Where do I recognise the feeling my body?

Is this feeling a familiar one?

How much of the past familiar feeling is playing out in this situation?

Taking some time to reflect on this when you find yourself in a repetitive dynamic can help you understand your response better, and respond in a more intentional way.

It may not always feel like there is much space in how we respond to how others act, or particular events, because on the most part, our reactions are automatic. After all, they need to be to enable us to function. Imagine how slow our lives would be if we had to think about thinking, or think about acting before reacting to everything.

So how do we create the space in which there is choice that leads to growth and freedom?

We need to understand how our reaction became automated and unpick it by looking at our past experiences that have hard wired our reactions. The more we understand this and its multiple layers (cognitively, emotionally, somatically), the better we we can effectively start to notice what's happening in the moment of our response, creating the space. From this space we are able to work towards change or acceptance.

Therapy can be hugely effective in helping clients through this process.

Have you ever wondered why childhood is so relevant to therapy? Click on the link to find out:

It can be a cliché of psychotherapy to be interested in childhood, but why live in the past when the issues you are experiencing today are nothing to do with it?How we respond to the challenges we face in life can be within our awareness, a complete blind spot or a combination of both. Hello, and welcome to my page.

My name is Nisa Burston and I am a BACP registered psychotherapist. I offer weekly, long-term and short-term therapy to adults (18 years and over) in a cabin office located amongst peaceful views of the countryside in Tardebigge., a short drive from Bromsgrove, Redditch, Barnt Green and Alvechurch.

I approach therapy in a relationally psychodynamic way. That probably doesn't mean much to most, so I will break it down for you. It comes from a belief that human suffering, on the most part, comes down to wounds inflicted in relationships throughout our lives. The blueprint of how you relate to others throughout your life, how it has helped or hindered you, is a great tool to help you understand how you have come to be, how it relates to your current issues, and to identify any changes you would like to make going forward.

The client-therapist relationship that we build gives us great insight into understanding this, therefore building an open and honest culture, one that is mutual and respectful, safe and supportive, will be an essential element of our sessions. If there are unhelpful patterns of relating, I am keen to use our interactions to safely try something different to break these patterns, and helping you build a tolerance as we explore the issues you bring to therapy.

I have worked with clients who have presented with a number of issues including:
abuse
agoraphobia
anger management
anxiety
depression
difficult family/marital issues
early relational trauma
loss
loneliness
major life changes
personal development
specific traumatic events

If you are interested in exploring whether we can work together, please contact me and include a brief description of why you are seeking therapy, and I will set up a free video chat to explore a bit more about each other.
