As a celebrant I’m there to plan and lead a ceremony that reflects the unique personality of the one who has died

I’ll write and give the eulogy - unless you have a family member or friend to do that

I can lead a memorial service at a later date - this is a celebration of life without the committal

If you are planning for end of life, I can help you plan a ceremony so that you can leave instructions for your family about how you want them to remember and celebrate your life

Following a cremation I can write and lead a simple ceremony for the internment or scattering of ashes

Christmas has arrived in Much Wenlock!

The Christmas Lights were officially turned on at the end of last week.

I love it when the Square and the High Street are all lit up.

It makes the short days seem a little lighter…

And the evenings a little brighter…

All the same, for some of us the festive air and the emphasis on family can leave us feeling bereft and lost…

Please be kind to yourself and focus on self-care.

And don’t forget to talk to people in your support network and let them know how they can support you...

Christmas can be a challenging holiday at the best of times…

but it's particularly difficult when you are struggling with loss and grief for someone dear.

Unfortunately there’s no simple remedy or quick fix.

It is a good idea to anticipate the difficulties and to plan ahead where you can.

Be aware of possible triggers and plan how you might deal with the emotions they bring up.

Put your feelings into words … and maybe say them out loud, write them down or tell a friend.

Think how you would like to commemorate your loved one on this holiday.

And don’t forget to let friends and family know how they can support you at this time.

December has just begun and as the festive season gets busy and the days get shorter, I thought I’d re-introduce myself 😊

I’m Ruth and I love being a funeral celebrant.

I'm privileged to walk beside those who are bereaved, guiding them through the process of planning and carrying out a celebration of life.

I’ve been a university lecturer and college teacher for many years and bring this experience to my role as a celebrant.

You can depend on my abilities as a public speaker and writer as I craft the ceremony and share the story of a life well lived.

You can be confident in my professionalism, depth of listening and the care and respect that I bring to creating a meaningful service.

I’ll meet you with compassion and warmth and even humour.

I live in the heart of the beautiful Shropshire countryside where I love getting out to walk in nature, reading a good book and time with friends and family.

When someone dies the relationship you have with them doesn’t end.

If you’re used to talking to them on a daily basis and sharing about your day, you may find it helpful to continue to do this.

It’s not unusual for people to talk to the person who has died - it can bring comfort.

Talk to them about how your day went, what happened, how you felt and the ups and downs of it.

You can talk out loud, keep a journal or write letters.

Do what works best for you in that moment.

And always be kind to yourself…

Such a beautiful reminder of something very simple …

the impact of kind words and deeds,

especially with the world in so much turmoil.

Let's remember to say something kind today 😊

I’m so happy to receive lovely feedback like this.

I’m always pleased to know that clients feel supported by me as we prepare a celebration of life for their loved one.

I have been asked if I find it upsetting when I meet with a bereaved family.

This question came from a widow who had been happily married for 62 years.

Funnily enough, I don’t find it upsetting.

My role is:

🦋 to hold the space so the family can reminisce and share their memories of their person

🦋 to be present with people who are grieving

🦋 to listen

I feel privileged to be able to support a family at such a difficult time.

🦋 What is a direct cremation?

This is when a person’s body is taken to be cremated with no funeral and often with no family or friends present.

🦋 Why have a direct cremation?

Often to save money as it costs a lot less than a funeral... and sometimes to avoid making a fuss or upsetting people.

🦋 The hidden cost of direct cremations

The downside of a direct cremation is that it can leave people with no closure following the death of a loved one and this can have a lasting impact.

🦋 What can you do to create closure?

Close family and friends can attend a direct cremation for an additional fee and...

You can have a memorial service or celebration of life at a time and place of your choosing.
