AAC and Me, Specialist AAC Support

AAC and Me, Specialist AAC Support AAC & Me provides specialist AAC teaching, training and assessment. Person-centred support that turns everyday moments into communication successes.

We help AAC users of all ages communicate confidently at school, at home and in care settings. Hi, I’m Tom – a specialist teacher and AAC consultant based in Thirsk, North Yorkshire. I set up AAC and Me to support children with complex communication needs in a way that’s practical, personalised and rooted in everyday life. With a background in teaching and a deep understanding of AAC, I’ve spent years working in schools and homes across Yorkshire, helping children build the skills and confidence they need to communicate.

Something a bit different today — me having a go with the Headmouse Nano on the GridPad 13.

Head-tracking as an access method. No hands needed.

I talk to a lot of families who are focused on finding the right AAC app or the right vocabulary — which is completely understandable. But access is just as important.

Trialling this myself is a good reminder of what it actually feels like to navigate with a new access method. Humbling. And useful.

If you're wondering whether alternative access might be right for your child, feel free to get in touch or book a free chat at aacandme.co.uk 💙

Very excited to be part of this next weekend… mainly because it’s proof they’re letting disabled people organise events now.

An afternoon of comedy, music and film with a brilliant lineup… and me lowering the tone.

Come along, have a laugh, and support a great cause at the same time. Everybody wins. Even me, somehow.

Who’s coming then…

Today is World Down Syndrome Day 💛

People with Down Syndrome are often fantastic communicators. They read people brilliantly, they’re expressive, and they know exactly what they want to say.

Sometimes the challenge is having the right tools to say it.

AAC can make a real difference – whether that’s signing alongside speech, a simple communication board, or a full voice output device. The right support opens doors.

Have you found something that’s worked well? I’d love to hear in the comments 👇

A lot of access still works on a “just ask” system.

Keys behind counters.
Ramps that staff have to unlock.
Entrances that require someone to notice you first.

Access should be part of the building, not something you have to request.

What is the most ridiculous “accessible” setup you have seen?

Another happy parent 💛

It means a lot when families say they felt understood and supported. My aim is always to listen first, understand where you are, and then suggest practical next steps that fit real family life.

Communication support should feel collaborative, not overwhelming.

If you’d like to chat about AAC support for your child or setting, you’re very welcome to message me.
