Whether you’re a professional footballer fighting to be at the top of the table, gearing up for the netball summer leagues, enjoy going for a run, or you simply like going for long dog walks, your feet are key to your ability to be active. Here are just a few tips to help keep your feet comfortable:
1. Consider the size of your footwear - Ensure your boots and sports shoes allow enough room for your toes to move comfortably. As a rule it’s good to allow a thumb’s width between your longest toe and the end of your shoe. An easy way to check is to remove the insole from your shoe and stand on it with your heal right at the back.
2. Tie your laces securely - having your heel anchored at the back of the shoe with your laces well tied helps keep your foot properly supported. Try looking up heel lock lacing.
3. Wear good socks - Good quality socks will help keep your feet comfortable and help with temperature regulation, cushioning, blister prevention and wick away moisture from your skin and nails (which will help reduce the occurrence of Athlete’s Foot and fungal nails).
4. Wash and thoroughly dry your feet, including between your toes, daily - a moist environment can allow fungal and bacterial growth leading to infections.
5. Trim your toenails regularly - This will help avoid ingrown nails and discomfort when you’re active. Avoid cutting your nails too short or too low at the edges.
And finally, pay attention to what your feet are telling you. If you’re in pain or discomfort, or simply struggling to reach your nails to trim them, then why not give me a call and book an appointment on 07740 333743, or find out more on my website: www.ClaireNfootcare.com
As a client of mine once said to me, “Your feet are your foundation, why wouldn’t you look after them?!”
