Investing in the future you may consider an ISA, perhaps a pension pot, some savings? Something bigger?

Hot Topic Alert - gabapentin.

During a consultation, it's not unusual for me to see gabapentin on a list of client medications........And of course....you may have seen the recent research. You may have concerns.

Some of you may know I have another "hat". By day, I am a slave to "big pharma" ๐Ÿ˜œ. So, of course I'm going to comment on this - wild horses wouldn't hold me back ๐Ÿคฃ

So here's what you need to know:

๐Ÿ“Œ It is important that you do not suddenly stop taking gabapentin. IF you consider this may be the right decision for you, you must be weaned down.

๐Ÿ“ŒYou must involve your prescriber in any decisions you make. It's important to let them know if you are changing any medications, otherwise it will remain on your "file". No one will know you have stopped taking it. Heaven forbid, you were suddenly admitted to hospital, the medications on your file are what they will give you. It'll make for an interesting hospital stay if nothing else......

๐Ÿ“ŒWhilst, many people consider gabapentin is NOT right for them, please don't panic if gabapentin has helped you. Your prescriber will weigh up the risks and benefits until such times guidelines are addressed. Heads up, gabapentin is not the only thing linked to dementia and declining cognitive function.......

Continuing the biophilia theme......

How often do you visit a forest? Aside from the enjoyment and visual stimulation of being closer to nature, there are genuine health benefits in regular visits to forests, known as forest bathing.

Have you ever heard the term phytoncides? Youโ€™d be forgiven if you havenโ€™t. Think of them as tree essential oils that have medicinal properties. They are one of the main benefits of forest bathing.

Studies have shown that if you visit forests regularly you could experience health benefits including reducing stress levels and boosting immune function, as well improvements to a range of other lifestyle-induced illnesses.

Our tip number 12 is to try forest bathing. Get outside and breathe in the fresh phytoncide-filled air. Itโ€™s a fantastic way to promote your health and wellbeing.

A natural connection............

Last week I enjoyed an impromptu "botanical mini-tour" with some mummy friends. Some little raised beds had been planted and tended to by some local schools and volunteers - a beautiful initiative for the community, perhaps to foster something called "biophilia".

In short, "biophilia" is a desire to co-exist with nature in a way that benefits both person and nature. Recently, the impact of a nature-connectedness on our wellbeing (and in particular the benefits for mental health) really has enjoyed the "spotlight". We've used plants as "therapy" since ancient times and, quite often, it's the reason people will consider clinical aromatherapy.

Is "biophilia" a new concept?

One friend spoke of her youth in Poland, where knowledge was routinely passed down through generations. "If we found a plant, or we were sick and didn't know what we needed, we wouldn't check it in a book, we would ask our grandparents"

Whilst "biophilia" is enjoying a surge in popularity, it has been around and very much "alive" for much, much longer ๐Ÿค—.

Are you "veggie" excited.....it's here.

Time to storm social media with your pictures of your veggies, locally sourced veggies, veggies you're cooking, veggies you've bought, your favourite veggies......

It's a protest (and those of you who know me, know I DO love a protest ๐Ÿ˜œ).

Media is flooded with junk food adverts. Convenience? Cheapness? What's not to love?

The link to inflammation and impact on mortality, that's what. Yes, my friends, there is actual research on this....

Healthy food costs around twice as much ultra-processed foods and there was change on the way as the government prepared to promote less processed foods......until the food industry lobbied to overturn the decision.

I'm not here to convert you to any form of eating, but I am simply here to talk about how great vegetables are and to encourage you if you can, to step away from cartons and packets and raise awareness.

Be prepared....the veggie spam is coming......

From a tiny acorn..............life transitions can be a big, old "party".

Fun, exciting and full of anticipation.........the next minute your friend's dad gets locked in a room and someone swallows the front door key! The road can get rocky.

Letting go of the old can be as important as embracing the new. Excitement, angst, grief can all present themselves and it's important to recognise disruption may be coming.

The use of scent can be a wonderful way to restore calm or focus. The direct connection between our nose and our "emotional centres" in our brain provides often "rapid response" and careful use of a blend that connects with the client, can provide calm or focus.

Will we be "splashing around" essential oils in the Natural Oil Clinic for our little acorn? Probably not as much as you may think! Less is more, and right alongside a carefully chosen blend will be attention to

Some big thoughts require big space.

A wonderful friend said to me decades ago "if you don't know what to do, do nothing, and wait"

My plan......to hike up to a particular spot where I could sit and breathe for a while. Maybe even catch the sunrise, basking in the sensory gifts that nature provides, the sights, the touch, the sounds, the agrestic healing aroma and enjoy a quiet solitude with a flask of beautiful coffee - thank you Nathez Out of Africa โ™ฅ๏ธ

The benefits of nature connection have really come to light in the last few years. As we look toward more sustainable healthcare, it is certainly one that most people can try and it has been found to have a positive impact on mental health.

As a dog walker, I'm no stranger to rain, it's not quite the morning I had planned but I'll enjoy the sensation all the same ๐Ÿค—
