Alexander Technique teaches you to use less effort and yet achieve greater effect from your actions. Useful for performers!

Here's an example that proves the point. A student of mine applied the technique to his golf. At the end of the backswing he reminds himself not to try too hard on the stroke – “60% effort” he says as he gives his Alexander directions (I don't know why he picked those words but it works for him). He finds his swing is easier and more fluid. Has it improved his scores though? No, he tells me. Why? Because he is hitting the ball so much further that he keeps overshooting the green! On 60% of the effort!
The overshoot can be easily corrected once he gets used to his new found efficiency. The main point is that he is achieving greater distance through using less effort, not more. How is this possible? To make a perfectly efficient swing, hundreds of muscles need to shorten and lengthen by the correct amount at the precise point of the arc of the club. If the timing or amount of contraction is wrong, muscles will end up opposing each other making the movement stiff and inefficient. When we 'try hard' we tend to interfere with the ideal coordination by over-contracting. We are better off staying out of the way and allowing subconscious mechanisms to organise the co-ordination for us. A movement that is coordinated in this way feels effortless - sometimes it even feels as though the movement has 'done itself'. And the results can be extraordinary!

Looking forward to a presentation to the The Wharfedale Piano Teachers - Alexander Technique - Retraining the Muscle Memory.
Expect practical demonstrations and opportunities to join in as well as an introduction to Alexander's main ideas and some little known anatomy of particular importance for pianists.
As an Alexander Teacher, Andy does not teach how to 'do' anything but you may learn something potentially far more useful - how to 'not do' the things you don't need! For most musicians a degree of 'overwork' has become built into the muscle memory in the form of excess tension. This does not achieve anything useful but makes our actions uncoordinated and may even lead to injury. Performance works better when we leave out everything we don't need. But it is easier said than done to simply leave out patterns of tension that have become part of our playing perhaps over many years. Andy will talk through Alexander's main ideas of 'inhibition' and 'direction' and give a practical demonstation of their use in action. There will also be a chance to participate in some exercises.

Booking is filling up for our June event with Paul Harris and Andy Moorhouse from Todmorden Alexander Technique. More details and booking link on our website: www.thewharfedalepianoteachers.co.uk

Back pain is scary!
Free-up Alexander Technique drop-in classes Wednesdays 7:30 during term time and 1-2-1 lessons at Todmorden Alexander Technique Studios.
Chronic back pain reduced from 18 days per month to 3 days after 24 Alexander lessons in clinical trials. Alexander Technique does not work by doing exercises in fact you don’t ‘do’ anything at all! Instead you learn to ‘not do’ the things that are causing you the trouble. ‘Not doing’ is a skill that can learned - leave out what you don’t need and simplify your life!

Back pain? Knee pain? Poor posture?
Learn to take the pressure off joints and move with more freedom. Alexander Technique drop-in classes starting Wednesday 17th September. You will learn learn ways of 'thinking' that let you perform everyday tasks with less effort. Studies show that after Alexander lessons postural muscle tone is redistributed to deeper muscles allowing more efficient and adaptable movement.

Very positive feedback from a new student who says she woke up without pain for the first time in years after her first lesson. You don't get anything for nothing of course - as always with AT she had to put some effort in to learn how to start leaving behind old habits and adopting new more efficient patterns of movement.

Good posture is simple! 💪🏼🙌🏼

Nurture’s resident Alexander Technique teacher, Andy Moorhouse, is giving a talk and live demonstration in Lydgate Parish Hall on 1st September at 2.30 pm.

Good posture is not about making an effort to 'stand up straight'. If you have tried that you will know that you quickly get tired and are back to where you were. A lasting improvement in posture is about SIMPLIFYING - making less effort, not more.
The question is, how to leave out what we don’t need - how to do less without losing what is essential to the movement?

Andy will introduce Alexander's main ideas and illustrate them through slides and simple practical demonstrations (which you can join in if you want). The techniques are used in performance art courses around the world and significant reductions in chronic back pain have been proven through clinical trials. Modern neuroscience helps us to understand how the techniques employed by Alexander teachers since the early 1900s help to redistribute postural muscle tone so we work more efficiently and adaptably.

There will also be a live demonstration of how, with a combination of verbal instruction and hands-on guidance, anyone can learn to perform a task with less effort and better posture. Learn to find the simplicity!

Before and after 15 minutes’ instruction in how to apply Alexander technique. The aim was to get up and down with less effort. The student’s neck and back are quieter when applying the technique which allows the task to be completed with far less effort*. Balance and confidence also look to be improved. The student had previously had 90 minutes instruction in applying the thought process when working in a chair and on a table. Old habits will probably return to some extent before her next lesson but with repetition the new, more efficient patterns will become reinforced. Further improvements are expected with practice.
* recent research suggests that postural muscle tone is redistributed to the deeper muscles of the neck and back (https://doi.org/10.1123/kr.2020-0026)

'Correcting' posture by standing up straight doesn't really work because we quickly get tired. The trick is to learn how to leave out patterns of tension that we don't need – natural good posture will then do itself without effort! Watch any toddler!
