We've sparked a conversation!
We've had lots of parents asking about whether their children who have a diagnosis or who are neurodiverse are welcome at YCSWU.
The short answer: absolutely, yes.
We donβt discriminate based on diagnosis, personality, or disability.
But we also want to be really clear about what our space is - and what it isnβt.
Unlike a forest school, a games club, or a parent-led support group, our co-learning space is designed to give children the chance to work independently on the learning set by their parents.
If youβve ever been to a co-working space for adults, youβll get the idea. Everyone brings their own work, there are some basic expectations (like being respectful, using headphones where needed, chatting quietly when itβs helpful but recognising when others need focus). Thatβs exactly the atmosphere weβre creating - just for children.
Weβre parents ourselves, and we get that children have wriggles and bursts of energy! We go to plenty of groups where our daughter can run around, and we actively balance that with time where she can focus on the subjects she loves.
β¨How can you support your child to thrive at YCSWU?
π Bring enough work to keep them busy for 3 hours (devices, workbooks, projects - whatever theyβre working on).
π Go through a little plan with them beforehand so they know what theyβll be doing.
π Pack headphones for podcasts, audiobooks, or focus music.
πInclude some downtime items like a book, drawing, colouring, or a fidget toy (and snacks too - brain fuel!)
π Let us know if your child has an enabler as they are welcome to come along too!
We are facilitators of a space where children can:
πBe curious
πLearn independently
πRespect others around them
πEnjoy co-learning together
So - whether your child is neurodiverse, has a diagnosis, or not - they are welcome here, as long as they can engage with the space as itβs intended: a quiet, focused place with room for a few wriggles.
This is a new concept - nothing like this has ever been done in Devon before. We're learning too - and we love that these conversations are happening. As always, our inbox is open if you've got any questions.
