Calving 2026 is a go at Bwlch Stabilisers 🙌🏻

A healthy and sharp heifer calf from 309 with a 358 day calving interval.

Calving interval describes the number of days between successive calvings. The target calving interval for a suckler cow is 365 days; where the calving interval is greater than 365 days this means that it takes longer than one year for a cow to produce successive calves.

The overall effect of longer calving intervals is to reduce profitability for suckler beef farms for the following reasons:

⭐️For spring calving cows, which represent the vast majority of our suckler herd, the length of the indoor winter feeding period is longer since cows are normally not turned out to grass until after calving. Thus, longer calving intervals increase total feed costs.

⭐️Where weaning occurs on a fixed date, weaning weights of the later-born calves are lower.

⭐️The likelihood of a cow with a longer calving interval becoming pregnant and remaining in the herd is reduced. This is because later calving cows have a shorter duration prior to breeding or indeed may be calving when the breeding season has already commenced.

⭐️The overall effect of this is lower pregnancy rates and higher cow replacement costs, a considerable cost in suckler beef systems. (Agriland 2015)

Smart Farming through the use of genetics PROFIT INDEX 🧬💲 Profit Index indicates what a bull will return over the number of calves he’s expected to sire in his lifetime. This is used to compare against the profitability of other bulls💲💪🏻

It pulls together fertility, longevity, growth, feed intakes, marbling and more to give you balanced genetics🧬 EBVs have recently been updated for 2026 and our bulls profit has actually increased making him more profitable and efficient over his lifetime. He has a profit index of £30,737 ranking him in the top 1% of recorded Stabiliser bulls in the UK. 🤞🏻Looking forward to seeing calves on the ground from him and seeing how using the best genetics can make our herd more efficient, profitable and productive.

NFU Suckler Cow Report 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🥩

“Developed by NFU Cymru’s Livestock and Less Favoured Area (LFA) boards, the document examines the outlook for Welsh suckler beef production and makes several recommendations to safeguard the sector’s future, along with the multiple economic, environmental, social and cultural benefits it delivers.

Suckler cow herds – kept for the production of beef - have been an iconic fixture of Welsh farming and Wales’ landscapes for centuries. Often reared in Wales’ Less Favoured Areas - where the range of crops that can be grown can be more limited - these cattle are central to habitat management, delivering biodiversity benefits and reducing wildfire risk, while also turning grass and natural rainfall into high quality, nutrient dense protein.” NFU 2026

“Suckler cows are an intrinsic part of Welsh livestock farming and form an important part of our culture and heritage. These herds have been integral to shaping and managing our landscapes over generations and played a vital role for our rural economy, too."
Rob Lewis, NFU Cymru Livestock Board Chairman

Ewe lambs at 1850 feet above sea level. Feeding the ewe lambs a little extra today in the snow. Making sure they all come to eat is imperative, especially in this cold weather. Looking healthy and happy regardless of the snow.

A beautiful morning too…. 💜❄️

Wishing all my friends and family a happy, healthy and prosperous new year. 2025 has been a challenging farming year to say the least with a lot more uncertainty to come. But we continue to be resilient and do what we do best; producing safe, sustainable and affordable food whilst protecting and enhancing the environment. Let’s hope 2026 is a good one. 🤞🏻💜🌈💫🍀
