The 1911 census shows both of my father’s parents as children living in the same street with their families! So does the family of my highest DNA match, we have no mutual ancestors?
So now my DNA journey begins...

My Irish connection. The Barracks, Fermoy, County Cork where my 3rd great-grandfather William Major was based when his son, my 2nd great-grandfather William Stuart Major was born. Many generations of this family line served in the British Army. I’ve more information and stories yet to find of battles fought (Waterloo, Crimea to name two!) and awards & medals won. William Stuart receiving a Distinguished Conduct Medal from Queen Victoria!
Do you have Irish ancestry?

The key to success is to revisit brick walls. Eventually I succeeded and found a whole new line of family in the Somerset town of Radstock! A new name has been added to my list of family names-Cottle. Have you recently broken down any brick walls?

Records show that in 1881 my 2nd cousin 2x removed Alfred William Fry was born in the Queen’s Park Estate in Paddington to Edwin & Hannah (nee Faulkner) Fry. I think this area looks interesting and is now added to my must visit list! Have you recently visited places your ancestors once frequented?

More of my ancestors living and working in a public house! The quay in Carmarthen where my Griffiths family lived. My 2x great grandfather George was a mariner and his wife Eliza ran the Mariners pub!! Still unable to find any photos of the pub, the 1871 census shows the building next door was the Jolly Tar public house…

The 1861 census shows my great grandfather Joseph Collins Fry working here aged 12 as a coal miner. Unsure when he started working underground, about 11 years later he and his brothers were working on the railways. This is a very important fact for my family as he relocated to London and married my great grandmother and so my story begins!

We look back to this day in 1801 when the very first census was taken. Have you found anything interesting in the census returns for your ancestors?

Seems Llanafan Fawr Farm aka Red Lion Inn was the home and business of my 4x great grandfather Rees Davies and family in the 19th century. I need to add this to my ‘to do’ list to find out how long my family lived/worked there. Do you have generations of a family live/work in the same place?
