I’ve realised that I haven’t posted for a while about the fundamental things that are most important to me and my classes.
For those of you who don’t know me that well, I’ve been teaching since 2009. It always bothered me (even as a participant) that often classes were overshadowed by the personalities which intimidated less confident people (like me). Often I’d see people hide at the back, turn up once, struggle to speak up… worry about where to put their mat..
People often also looked a certain way …a style which I could never replicate no matter how I tried. The right trainers, the crop tops, the no sweating…what’s that about it? How?!
I hated that for myself but I also hated it for everyone else who just felt like they couldn’t fit in. I was a square peg trying to fit into a very round hole and no matter what ..I just didn’t fit in.
I’ve tried so hard over so many years to make sure that people feel included, feel seen and most importantly- don’t feel judged. That no matter whether you’re square, round, hexagon or star shaped - you’ll always feel like there’s a place for you in my classes.
I don’t care how strong you are, how fast you are, the size of your leggings - all I care about is the fact you’ve turned up and you’re TRYING.
Unfortunately, social media doesn’t always help our perspective of the world. We all want the best picture. We want things to shine. We want others to think that we are are enjoying each and every moment of often quite a frustrating life.
Life clearly isn’t like that.
So, we are a merry band of all shapes, sizes, ages, abilities ..in a school hall… with no air con and holes in our mats ..but none of us care. We don’t wear crop tops. We don’t even always wear trainers let alone the right ones. But we never judge each other. We only ever want the best for each other. No one looks, judges, comments or other.
We understand that our bodies have changed since 2009. We aren’t seeking a size 6 or a PB - we just do what we need to do with a smile.
If you think you fit in with our merry band - you’d be very welcome to join us.
Natalie - not fitting in since 1978.
