This week, we’re celebrating the incredible power of human milk - especially for the tiniest and most vulnerable babies on our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Breastmilk is so much more than nutrition for sick and preterm babies. It provides vital antibodies, supports gut development, reduces the risk of infection, and is truly life-saving for many of the babies we care for.

At the Rosie Hospital NICU, we are proud to have a dedicated Infant Feeding Team supporting families through every step of their feeding journey. Our team of three specialist staff are available Monday to Friday, and we offer twice-weekly peer support drop-in sessions to provide a warm, welcoming space for parents to ask questions, share experiences, and feel supported. These run on a Monday and Friday at 13:30 so please drop by if your baby is on the NICU and you would like to meet some other families and speak with the team.

Feeding on the NICU can be a very different experience- but no parent is alone. We’re here to support, guide, and celebrate every drop of human milk. 💪🍼💕

This World Breastfeeding Week we’re also celebrating the incredible work of families who are expressing while their baby is on the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Pumping for your baby- especially on the NICU- takes strength, patience and deep love. Every drop milk you express is a powerful gift, full of comfort, protection and connection.

We see your effort. We honour your journey. And we are here to support you every step of the way.

The early relationship you, your partner and family have with your baby is important to their development and supporting their future health and wellbeing.

There are many ways to build a strong bond with your baby, including:

👶Skin-to-skin and eye contact
👶Copying their facial expressions and positively responding to noises they make
👶Talking, reading and singing with your baby

Every parent or carer will bond at their own pace, but if you're finding it hard to relax with your baby and feel a bond isn't developing, talk to your midwife, health visitor or GP.

Further information and guidance around bonding with your baby can be found at the Start for Life website. Find the link in our bio or search for "Start for Life Bonding"

Caesarean birth is the preferred mode of birth only when it is considered that the risks of vaginal birth outweigh the possible benefits.

The NICE guideline recommends that where caesarean birth is requested, without medical reason, that we should discuss with you the overall benefits and risks of caesarean birth compared with vaginal birth, and if caesarean birth is still your preferred option, we will facilitate this.

Some reasons for this may include:

➡️previous birth experience
➡️complications in current pregnancy
➡️anxiety or fear of giving birth
➡️concerns of safety of vaginal birth
➡️cultural reasons

To be able to support your choice and aid your decision making around the birth of your baby, the information on our website will guide you in the process of your request and our understanding of your personal needs to support this request.
