BEGIN AGAIN: It was five days after her 40th birthday when I bumped into an acquaintance whilst running errands last weekend. Instead of the usual chit chat, we found ourselves in deep conversation about the new experiences she was having at this life stage. Her journey sounded familiar, reminiscent of the beginning of my own midlife journey a decade ago. Though her path seemed challenging, I felt excited for her.
She’s an impressive woman who has achieved so much, despite the difficulties life has thrown her way. And now here she was, stepping boldly into these transitional years—feeling them fully, eyes wide open, heart bursting with questions. She wasn’t without fear and described her deeply ingrained people-pleasing patterns that kept her stuck. Beneath it all, a rising rage signalled change on the horizon, though its form wasn’t yet clear.
“I’m looking forward to not giving a f**k,” she said with a smile, half-defiant, half-hopeful.
“You will,” I replied, smiling back. “Welcome to midlife.”
Walking away, I felt nourished by our exchange. These moments of authentic connection remind me how deeply we need one another. Her courage and willingness to step into the unknown reaffirmed the purpose of my work in The ReEmergence Process—a framework for guiding women through the transformative waters of midlife. Women like her, standing at this threshold, ready to dive into the depths of change, are who this work serves.
Midlife, with its physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual shifts, can feel isolating—but it doesn’t have to. So many women around us are struggling to navigate this liminal time. A friend once said, “women need women,” and that truth feels more vital than ever. This key turning point brings with it phenomenal opportunities. It's a time of unraveling and becoming—a chance to let go of who we were told to be and step fully into who we are meant to be.
If you’re standing at this threshold, feeling the pull toward something more, join me at my upcoming talk. Together, we’ll explore what it means to begin again. This is not an ending but an invitation to rediscover ourselves and everything we’re here to be.
