We continue to respond to the ongoing impacts of Storm Goretti across Cornwall.

Here is the latest update on water supplies, power outages, and highways, along with important safety advice.

Vulnerable people

Support is available for vulnerable residents who remain without electricity.

If you have any concerns, please contact us as soon as possible so we can help. Many essential items such as community equipment, electric hoists, stair lifts and pressure-relieving mattresses have manual or backup options. However, as this power outage has been prolonged, we want to make sure people remain safe and supported.

If you're worried about your equipment or its backup arrangements, please let us know. We can assess the situation and, where needed, consider alternative solutions or replacements to help keep you safe and comfortable.

For social care emergencies – Safeguarding Adults and Children - call 0300 1231 116.

For out of hours emergency repairs, Medequip can be reached on 020 8573 2871.

Water update

South West Water has now restored water supplies to more than half of its customers in Helston and the surrounding area. Repairs are ongoing to six major water mains in the Helston area that were damaged by Storm Goretti, and this continues to affect water supplies.

Teams are working as quickly as possible to restore supplies.

South West Water will be crediting affected customers in line with their Customer Promise:
£50 for the first 12 hours without water
£50 for every additional 12-hour period

You don’t need to do anything, your credit will be applied automatically and reflected on your next bill. South West Water will write to eligible customers to confirm this.

For those without water, there are two bottled water stations open on Sunday - January 11:

Old Flambards Car Park, Helston, TR13 8BN (W3W: erupted.overjoyed.panthers) – Open 24 hours

Mullion School, Meaver Road, Mullion, TR12 7EB (W3W: enrolling.stopwatch.visions) – Open until 10pm

Unfortunately, due to strong winds and safety concerns, the water station at Folly Field Car Park, Marazion station, is temporarily closed.

South West Water is reviewing the situation hourly and will provide an update as soon as it’s safe to reopen.

Power outages update

As of Sunday morning, around 7,000 households remain without power.

National Grid has set up welfare provisions in Penryn and warm spaces in key locations where people can access heated areas, hot food and drinks.

You can check the latest locations at https://orlo.uk/Welfare_Hubs_ps3BQ

If you're without power, please call National Grid on 105 or 0800 6783 105.

Use these numbers to report lasting power cuts, damage to power lines and infrastructure, or someone you are worried about.
You can also report a power cut online at https://orlo.uk/Report_a_Power_Cut_gZ9Cy or https://orlo.uk/Power_Cuts_JNiKc

Highways update

Highways teams continue to respond to a significant number of incidents, particularly in west Cornwall.

With further wet and windy weather forecast, some areas remain unsafe due to fallen trees and branches, and there is a continued risk of further disruption.

Please pay close attention to road closures and do not move or remove signage, as it is in place for public safety.

If you see fallen trees or branches on a highway or on Cornwall Council land, please report it with a photo and your what3words location via the council website or by calling 0300 1234 222.

We would like to thank residents and communities for their patience, support and understanding. Please continue to give our teams the time and space they need to carry out this essential recovery work safely.

Openreach

If you're experiencing issues with phone or broadband services, you can check the BT service status in your area online - https://orlo.uk/Check_BT_Service_Status_jfkdE

Unsafe, damaged or vandalised Openreach equipment should be reported directly to Openreach via their website - https://orlo.uk/Report_Unsafe_Openreach_Equipment_3kst5

⚠️ Storm Goretti – Service Update: Friday 9 January: 10am

⚡️Some GP practices and district nursing teams are impacted by power outages.

Most disruption is currently in west Cornwall, including the Lizard and Roseland areas. Current practices that we are aware of with no power are: Bodriggy, Marazion, Middleway, Mullion, Perranporth, Praze, Probus, St Agnes, St Keverne and Carnon Downs.

⏰Some clinics may be running late, with staff impacted by travel disruption - thank you for your patience.

📆If you have an NHS appointment today:
• Due to some power outages, some GP surgeries and services may not be able to access their systems. Where possible, patients will be contacted if appointments need to be cancelled or rearranged.
• If you feel it is unsafe to travel, or you are unable to attend, please contact the service in the usual way to cancel or rearrange when you are able to do so.

👩‍🔬If you need care, the NHS is still here for you:
• GP practices and pharmacies: some locations may be impacted by loss of power, so please check before travelling
• Minor Injury Units and Urgent Treatment Centres: Check opening and live waiting times online before you travel: Urgent care waiting times | Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust
• NHS 111: use 111 online or call 111 for urgent health advice
• 999: always call in a life- or limb-threatening emergency

👏Our sincere thanks to NHS and community colleagues who have stayed on beyond shifts last night, through the night and this morning to support patients and essential services.

Thank you for your patience and kindness to NHS staff during this disruption 💚

⚠️ SERVICE UPDATE – STORM DISRUPTION ⚠️

Due to the ongoing effects of the storm, both St Mawes Surgery and Tregony Surgery currently have no WiFi or phone signal. As a result, we are unable to take calls or access systems at these sites.

📞 Important phone information:
Any calls made to St Mawes or Tregony surgeries will be automatically redirected to Portscatho Surgery, where staff are available to assist. Please be aware that call volumes may be higher than usual.

Portscatho Surgery is open and staffed. However, the GPs scheduled to be on duty today have also been affected by the storm and are currently making their way to the surgery as conditions allow. This may result in delays to services.

We ask patients to only contact or attend if their medical concern is urgent for today.

Further updates will be shared as soon as we are able. Thank you for your patience and understanding, and please stay safe.

⚠️ STORM UPDATE – IMPORTANT INFORMATION ⚠️

Due to the severe weather and our rural location, we have limited information about road conditions across the Roseland. This means we are unable to confirm how quickly staff will be able to travel in, particularly with ongoing road disruptions and school closures. As a result, we may be operating with reduced (skeleton) staff this morning.

Please only contact or attend the surgery if your medical concern is urgent and requires attention today.

We may need to cancel appointments at short notice once we have clearer updates from staff, and we thank you for your patience and understanding.

Please continue to check our website or page for updates. Cornwall Council and the Emergency Services advise against travelling unless absolutely necessary.

Please stay safe.

Emergency alerts will be sent to mobile phones at 5pm today - January 8 - as Storm Goretti hits Cornwall.

It will contain information on the red weather warning and how to stay safe.

Compatible mobile phones will make a loud siren-like sound even if they are set on silent. The sound and vibration will last for about 10 seconds.

Those experiencing domestic abuse with hidden phones could be put at risk if the device is discovered.

You can opt out in your phone’s settings to protect your safety.

iPhone - Search “Emergency Alerts” in settings → Turn off Severe & Emergency alerts

Android - Search “Emergency Alerts” in settings → Turn off Severe & Emergency alerts (and other threat categories if listed)

Your lungs and your heart are a great team!

🫁 Your lungs do the work of bringing oxygen in.
💓 Your heart and blood vessels deliver it everywhere it needs to go.

That’s why high blood pressure can quietly strain your lungs, reducing the oxygen your body gets.
Healthy breathing starts with healthy blood pressure.
Know Your Numbers and Take Action

Once you know what your blood pressure numbers are, it's important to understand what to do next if they're high.
Contact your GP and discuss your blood pressure reading, they'll be able to advise on next steps.
