Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust Trauma Unit 1

Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust Trauma Unit 1 Trauma & Orthopaedics However, as you can see, we mend not only bones. The age range of patients we see on the ward can range from 16 to 116.

We are a large orthopaedic surgical trauma unit, and majority of our patients come from ED, however, we also get admissions from Fracture Clinic, other wards, other hospitals, and from home. Patients are admitted to the ward with numerous different fractures some of which include:

Neck of Femur
Tibia
Fibula
Metatarsal
Metacarpal
P***c Rami
Calcaneus
Olecranon
Ankles
Wrists
Spinal Fractures

We also have patients who have:

Infections
Wounds
Medical problems
Psychological problems
Social Issues
Mobility Problems
Learning Difficulties
Drug & Alcohol problems
Elective Surgery

This is only a small portion of the patients we treat but it goes without saying that if it's broken and it's a bone we are the ward that will attempt to fix it surgically. Some patients attend the ward with partial amputations, crush injuries, and joint problems, to name but a few. There are many traumatic injuries that we see on a day-to-day basis and each case is different. So it is clear that every day is different on the ward and you will never know what you will come across when you turn up for a shift.

Empowering our Trauma staff members for Service Excellence

Staff members from Trauma Unit, RCHT attended the study day called Fundamentals of Care conducted by Kate Schroder-Hockey Matron for Trauma Services RCHT.

It was a meaningful and fruitful session as Trauma team members gain a better understanding of patient fall prevention and skin damage, caring for patient with delirium, service satisfaction, what does a good care looks like, importance of post-op mobility for surgical patients and care of patient with traction.

We will continuously expand our knowledge to provide the best possible patient experience.
