At Maverick Therapies, we are not based in a traditional clinic space. Instead, we use meaningful, real-life tasks, such as feeding our horses, to develop skills and support clients in working toward their individual goals. ๐๐๐ช๐ป
A simple task such as feeding our horses includes so many activities and opportunities to develop skills, such as:
1๏ธโฃ Scooping feed and supplements โ fine motor control, bilateral coordination, graded force, visualโmotor integration, sequencing, and quantity concepts.
2๏ธโฃ Opening and closing different containers โ hand strength, in-hand manipulation, motor planning, problem-solving, and executive functioning.
3๏ธโฃ Stacking supplement containers to make a tower, spatial awareness, motor grading, planning, team work and coordination.
4๏ธโฃ Exploring textures and smells, adding water and stirring โ tactile and olfactory processing, sensory discrimination, bilateral coordination, cause and effect, and interoceptive awareness through guided body check-ins.
5๏ธโฃ Carrying and delivering feed to the horses โ heavy work for regulation, core strength, postural control, balance, safety awareness and connecting with the horses. This also can incorporate reflective prompts to build interoceptive awareness (e.g., connecting the horseโs hunger cues with the clientโs own internal states).
โจThis is a meaningful and valuable task that promotes independence and builds confidence. Itโs also a transferable activity that can be continued at home, such as feeding the family dog or preparing food to feed ducks at the park. ๐ถ ๐ฆ
* Safety first: Not all horse feeds and supplements are appropriate for children to handle. Always check labels, supervise closely, and wash hands thoroughly after participating.
