Horses stay warm through their thick, insulating winter coat that traps air, the heat generated from digesting high-fiber forage in their digestive system (acting like an internal furnace), and the ability to constrict blood flow to their extremities. Horses also grow more body fat for added insulation, use their muscles to generate heat when active, and can fluff their hair to increase insulation, but they also need protection from wind and moisture from rain or sweat.

The annual fun day is nearly here !! The weather has blessed us again too ☀️! We will have lots of water stations for your dogs 🐕 . Please note that car parking is at the farm entrance opposite Holme Grange Craft Village and NOT the main Dog Trouble entrance !
We are looking forward to seeing everyone on Sunday !
⏰ 10am - 4Pm
ALL money raised at the funday goes to the care and rehabilitation of our rescue dogs. Without your help, we wouldn’t be able to do the work that we do and it is hugely appreciated!

Very interesting presentation and the roller is something we should all be aware of and the pressure it can cause on the spine …..

A fascinating presentation from Dr Russell MacKechnie-Guire on Training Aids and Polework.

Here a few take-home points about lungeing and training aids.
The fit of the roller is an important consideration but often isn't looked at. Research has shown that lungeing with a roller on creates high pressure on the dorsal midline of the horse each time the forelimbs touch the ground. The girth of the roller should also be considered and where it sits in relation to the elbow.

Before using a training aid
What is your objective for using a particular training aid?
Do you understand how the training aid works?
Does the horse have the capacity to deal with the effect of the training aid?
Can you lunge effectively?
Consider each horse as an individual
