It's important to see a midwife as early as possible to get the antenatal (pregnancy) care and information you need to have a healthy pregnancy.

You do not need to tell a GP you're pregnant unless you're taking medicine or have a long-term health condition.

Your first midwife appointment should happen before you're 10 weeks pregnant. If you're more than 10 weeks pregnant, you should still refer yourself to start your pregnancy care as soon as possible.

You can refer yourself for pregnancy care from 5 weeks pregnant on our website https://www.mtw.nhs.uk/service/maternity/

If you cannot refer yourself online please contact: 01892 638158 or 01892 633488

Urgent reminder 🚨

Today, BBC Morning Live featured a segment about private scan clinics.

After interviewing 2 mums with negative experiences of private scan clinics, the presenter said pregnant women could check their baby’s heartbeat themselves with a stethoscope for reassurance. This advice is not only wrong, but dangerous because you could be falsely reassured.

No home scanning device, doppler or app can tell you if your baby is well. While it may sound tempting, it's not a safe way to listen to your baby’s heartbeat or check they're okay. This can only be done by a midwife or health professional.

Unless you're professionally trained, it's easy to confuse what you're hearing or seeing and be falsely reassured.

If you're worried about reduction in baby's movements, or have any other concerns, contact your maternity unit immediately.

🌸 Feedback Friday 🌸

We love hearing from the amazing families we’ve had the privilege to support during their journey 💕

Thank you to Alekhya who sent this lovely feedback, congratulations on the birth of baby Taara.

"Time truly flies. I delivered my baby girl on 2nd February 2025, and I will forever be grateful for the incredible support I received throughout my journey.

From the moment my pregnancy was confirmed until the final week, Midwife Elisha supported me with so much care and reassurance. I delivered around my 41 weeks through a vaginal delivery at Maidstone Birth Centre. We arrived at the birth centre on 1st February around 10 PM, and my baby girl was born safely the next morning around 6AM.

The midwives Karen and Laura were absolutely wonderful. They supported me through every stage of labour with patience, kindness, and constant encouragement. My husband and I felt truly safe and cared for in their hands.

We had heard many negative opinions from people—warnings about midwives, complaints, and advice not to choose a birth centre. But we trusted ourselves, trusted the universe, and most importantly, trusted the NHS team. That trust was rewarded when our baby girl arrived safely and beautifully.

My labour pains began around 28th January, and from then until the 1st of February, the midwives stayed in continuous contact with me through phone calls, monitoring and guiding me patiently. We did visit Tunbridge Wells Hospital for a check-up, but our wish was always to deliver at the birth centre, so we waited for the right time.

After delivery, due to a third-degree tear, I was admitted to Tunbridge Wells Hospital. I don’t remember the midwives’ names there, but every single staff member was kind, responsible, and compassionate. I was discharged around 3rd February, feeling well cared for.

Even after my delivery and discharge from the hospital, I was continuously monitored by healthcare workers and midwives. Their support never stopped. We received regular check-ins and guidance, and we truly never felt alone.

Although we didn’t have any elderly family members around us, my husband and I managed everything ourselves with the support of our friends—and most importantly, with the constant care of the midwives and healthcare team. Looking back, we are genuinely happy and proud of the decisions we made.

We will forever be grateful to the NHS, the midwives, and all the healthcare workers who stood by us during such an important phase of our lives. Sometimes we still wonder—how do you even thank people who care so selflessly?

Thank you, truly, from the bottom of our hearts. We will always remember everything you did for us and for our little angel Taara , who is turning one very soon.
It’s been a year, yet the care, kindness, and support you gave us remain fresh in our hearts♥️

We will always be grateful to the NHS, especially the Maidstone Birth Centre team. This is a memory we will carry forever.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Alekhya & Snehith"

Making decisions during pregnancy, labour and after birth can feel overwhelming.

Use the BRAINS decision-making tool to help you make choices that are right for you and your baby.

Benefits - what are they benefits?
Risks – are there any risks?
Alternatives – are there any alternatives?
Is it for ME and my baby – what’s important to me and what is my gut telling me?
Nothing – what happens if I do nothing?
Space – Can I have space to think about this? Can I get a second opinion?
