Planning for Spring: In all the classes I teach I combine movement practices and intention in order to support, temper and harmonise the energy of the particular season we are in.
I love this process of curating and editing - from the breathwork, to the visualisations, to the combination and running order of the forms, the seasonal references, to the poetry and prose that I read at the end that brings it all together. There is method in my madness!
I combine all this in to a seasonal series of 5 or 6 classes with a development arc in mind: introducing new forms (some of which I am in the process of learning myself) balanced with some old standards/favourties - so that the classes feel fresh; but also familiar. A little challenge. A little comfort. Repetition, balanced against the new. The unfamiliar then becomes the familiar as new muscle memory connections are made and a different part of the body is targeted, strengthened and nourished and the brain synapses also get a gentle workout from establishing new neural pathways.
And always with the overriding principle in mind of ahimsa - a sanskrit term for non-harming. Qigong and Yoga are nourishing, healing practices - coming from a place of caring for yourself, rather than looking to change yourself.
