Self care is not selfish. Self-Care is essential to everyone around you. If you don’t take care of you, how can you look after those around you, to the best that they and you deserve.
So a perfect example is what is happening right now in my very own family:-
My mother-in-law suffers from advanced dementia and my father-in-law looks after her and the house perfectly. So, he suffered a brain haemorrhage around late February. He has kept quiet, putting my mother-in-law care first. very honourable, telling us all everything was fine, slowly bleeding into his brain, no physical symptoms, but slowly we noticed something was wrong, but he just kept telling us he was exhausted, his symptoms were easy to but down to physical, mental and emotional exhaustion. However on Friday the symptoms were at the point that we could no longer ignore. After a 3 hr drive, we arrived at their home. My father-in-law was already in hospital and we heard the news that he needed to be referred to a specialist hospital and needed urgent brain surgery. With very high risk, we had no choice, leave him as is and death was inevitable. Thank goodness the surgery was successful and he is recovering well.
However, my mother-in-law dementia is out of control and she is frightened, feels unsettled, lost and out of routine. His lack of self-care has resulted in this situation being so much worse than it could have been, longer time in hospital and a major operation.
I’m not saying that his lack of self-care cause the brain haemorrhage, but it did cause a bad situation to turn into a life-threatening situation.
Never forget your mental, emotional and physical health is just if not more important than anyone else’s.
Hypnotherapy, counselling, cognitive behavioural therapy and psychotherapy can help you look after your self- care.
