“People might worry about coming out as gay and they might also worry about ‘coming out’ as autistic. Many autistic people learn to mask their neurodivergence and adapt to the world around them. But it’s important to accept who you are.”

As a q***r, autistic student midwife with a keen interest in academic research, Sophie Rayner is passionate about promoting awareness and accessibility to healthcare services for all autistic people.

“A study from the University of Cambridge shows that autistic people are significantly less likely to identify as heterosexual than those who are neurotypical. In my career, I'll meet and work with many autistic people and I know they will have a diverse range of sexual orientations.”

It’s estimated that one in 100 people has Autistic Spectrum Disorder and that there are around 700,000 autistic people in the UK.

“Just as awareness and acceptance of people’s sexuality is important, autism awareness is vital for everyone, particularly those of us in healthcare, so that we can provide the best care for our patients, as well as supporting our neurodiverse colleagues”, said Sophie.

"Women can face a lot of pressure from all sorts of people towards the end of pregnancy.

“Haven't you had it yet?!"

Perhaps this is because our modern culture values efficiency, productivity and being on time, because being overdue in any context is seen as a negative thing.

But women have the right to make their own decision about induction and any other intervention they are offered and guidelines are just that: a guide."

This is especially the case when there are other pros and cons to be taken into account.

That’s a quote from my book, Inducing Labour: making informed decisions.

It’s one of two books I have written on this topic.

I also have lots of free posts, articles and resources on my website if you’re looking for more information about induction.

Because what’s important is that you make the decision that’s right for you.

So much information out there these days.

It's hard to tell what is true (even when it sometimes isn't what we want to hear) and what is well-intended but inaccurate.

And the reality is - and I say this as someone who shares information for a living - that, when you're anxious and trying to make the decisions that are right for you, more information doesn't always help.

Especially when things are complex, and changing daily.

Information can help, yes.

But trust is important too.

As is knowing that these are your decisions to make, and you don't need to please anyone else.

Because one thing is true, and has been true for millenia.

On the whole, women's and babies' bodies know what they are doing.

Yes, we sometimes need help, but we most certainly don’t need the level of intervention that exists in maternity care now.

Again, I say that as someone who has been involved in birth and birth-related research for three decades.

We may have lost sight of some of the wisdom, and some of it has been shaken out of us by the advent of routines and tests and technologies, but it's still there.

There might be lots of things that you don't know right now, but your body doesn't need you to know in order to do its thing.

You've got this.

If you do want information, I have a whole website full, and it's free.

You can also see my book which I have written to help you make the decisions that are right for you.

That's at www.sarawickham.com/wrfm

I hope it helps.

I love talking about how the cervix really behaves during labour and birth.

Because have you ever noticed that cervices haven’t read the textbooks?

That, although we are taught that they are supposed to open in a linear, unidirectional and relatively predictable manner, many don’t actually do that?

I’ve been pondering this for a few years, and it is one of the topics that I get asked to speak about quite a bit.

It's also one of the reasons that I make and sell "velvet va**nas!"

On my website, I have a page which gathers together the main articles that I have written on this and related topics in one place for anyone who is interested.

And this weekend, our Etsy shop is open for the last time before October. So if you need a "velvet va**na" of your own (or want to find out why we call them that), jump over to https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/DrSaraWickham?

Link in bio as well 💜

We are thrilled to announce a NEW DATE to our schedule of events for this year!!

Please join us on 11 September from 10-4pm.

We are collaborating with The Baby Fayre to host a double whammy of an event at Leicester Racecourse where you will find a baby event inside the grandstand over 2 floors and the artisan market outside.

The artisan event will be the usual mix of makers, bakers, crafters and traders. The baby fayre is typically a market place event for local businesses to showcase their products and services relating to pregnancy, birth, parenting and early years.

Trader enquiries are welcomed on a strict first come first served basis as we have received lots of “local” interest as well as our existing Trader Family wishing to travel with us.

We are very excited about this collaboration since both events are FREE to attend and footfall for this venue has always been generous.

Hope to see you there 🐎

In most countries of the world, parents will be asked whether they want their baby to have vitamin K, usually within the first hour of birth.

It’s your decision whether or not your baby has vitamin K.

If you decide that you want your baby to have it, it’s also up to you to decide which kind of vitamin K (oral or injection) you want your baby to have.

So you’ll want to weigh up the pros and cons, as with every decision you’ll make for your child.

I have been researching vitamin K for more than twenty years, and I have written several books and information leaflets on this subject for a number of organisations around the world.

I also have several blog posts that might help you better understand the issues.

In ‘seven things every parent needs to know about vitamin K, I summarise some of the key facts that you might want to consider when making your decision.

You can read it at https://www.sarawickham.com/articles-2/information-about-vitamin-k

I hope you’ll find it useful.

💩💩MECONIUM FACTS💩💩
➡️➡️S W I P E ➡️➡️

💩Meconium is baby’s first p**ps… it’s black/green and sticky!
💩Using petroleum jelly on baby’s bottom helps it to not stick!
💩Warm water and cotton wool is the best for wiping it off

💩Baby’s can have their first p**p inside the uterus
💩This isn’t always a sign of distress and is completely normal the majority of the time.
💩But when meconium is present in amniotic fluid, when waters break for example, it sets off a cascade of interventions that are potentially not needed and can actually increase the risks to baby.
💩Make sure you’re clued up on the FACTS and the risks!
💩Above are a few snapshots taken from a blog post by the wonderful Dr Rachel Reed
💩For more detailed information, the link to the blog can be found in my bio.

💩Did you have meconium present in your waters? Share your experiences below ⬇️⬇️⬇️
