He wasn’t naughty
He wasn’t an a**hole
He wasn’t “just being difficult”

He was however so skeletally compromised that a comfortable ridden life was never going to happen and time was against him. Not every horse is suitable to be ridden just the same as not every human is compatible with being an athlete. We need to normalise that behaviour is communication. We need to accept that there are many things in a horses body that make riding super hard for them.

This horse went through two breakers before his owner very diligently persisted with positive reinforcement training. He did make excellent progress, that is to be commended! But here’s my issue, positive reinforcement sometimes still masks these issues. It became obvious to his owner that he was becoming more internalised and less happy even in the paddock. Horses will try harder if you ask them nicely and there’s rewards for good behaviour. I’m not saying positive reinforcement is bad, it’s a great tool….im just saying it can mask serious issues. The biggest give away was how seriously assymetric he was. This is something I have felt many times while ridng these types. Asymmetry is normal but riding a horse that has wildly different left and right reins is not normal.

This is so complex on so many levels, so many.

Ever met a horse that was odd from birth? I believe inherited trauma is also a real factor, if you haven’t read the study on mice and how it took many generations to stop passing along, I suggest you do. It’s now well documented in humans too. Link below.

Healing for beautiful Bonny the other day. Her last session was over a year ago where she was very distracted but had some lovely moments, this time so much more relaxed with her chin resting on the bar of the stable, and lots of releases. ❤️🐴🙏

UK CLINIC SUMMER 2026
Northhamptonshire.
https://emotionalhorsemanship.com/uk-clinic-2026-113925

Thrilled and delighted to confirm our wonderful host Catherine, and venue Grange Farm Stables / Naturally Light Equitation, for a clinic in the UK July 18-19th 2026.

This will be the first time EH will present a clinic in the UK.

A two day Introductory Clinic presents an alternative to the alternative. A way to train, handle and care for horses that doesn't just say the horse comes first. The horse really does come first.

All disciplines are welcome. We support a diverse range of equestrians, from sport/competitive riders, to mules, mustangs, ponies, recreational horses, Iberians, drafts... you name it, we welcome it.

Our only pre-requisite is that you care for horses deeply, and attend with an open mind and heart.

This two day process presents two very different days. A structure which allows for individuals to express their unique needs, the clinic becomes increasingly specific and tailored towards the individuals present as time goes on.

I am so grateful to be coming, and I hope to see you there.

We will have payment plans available for anyone who requires them, these are interest free and enables you to book your spot and pay for it slowly.

What if it's not just the money?

What if it's not even the ribbon chasing?

These aspects of the industry might be a symptom, not the cause.

We all need to take a closer look at how we see horses.
The rider Mom's who chooses to skip the groundwork/ flatwork lessons for their kid's because they "just want them to have fun"
This is where the kids learn it"s " just a horse'. Just a tool for their entertainment.

It's the rider choosing to keep using harsh tools, because it "takes too long to train them better"

It choosing harsh tools because " I can't compete without them"

It's me getting frustrated with my horse because they don't nail that move for an Instagram post.. Because I haven't put the time in.

It's the farrier tying up a horses foot "just to get the job done"

It's the person tying a horse to a pole with no preparation to "teach them patience"
Or tying a foal to a donkey to " halter train".

It's the instructor telling a student to whip their horse to "stop dangerous behavior."

It's that breeder chasing horses to get great movement shots for marketing.

If Isit long enough I can fill a book, and half of the cases might be me, or have been me.

We ALL need to take responsibility for the truth that's bubbling out of the industry. All is not well.
It isn't new.
Only the exposure is new.

I can assure you it doesn't suddenly happen at the top because of competition pressure.
It happens every day of the week at a thousand different riding schools, trail outfits and a hundred farm yards.
The pointing needs a break and we need to put up our hands if we truly want the lives of horses to improve.

If you feel you have it all perfect.. That's one of the most dangerous attitudes for anyone in a relationship with another sentient being.

In our human relationships, and our horse relationships, we should always be looking at how we can be a better partner.
