In this final post I’m just going to give you an update, a snapshot shall we say of where James is in his life now. As I write this James has just been to stay for one of his regular weekend sleepovers. I love having him to stay and he was in the loveliest of moods this weekend. On Saturday evening he snuggled up next to me on the sofa with his iPad which he played with intermittently while we watched Mamma Mia on TV....

When Joan suggested to me 3 years ago that we set up an online blog and website I had no idea initially what I would write about. Joan went about sharing her wealth of experience as a special needs teacher and so I just wrote about my son, James. This is my 65th blog post on this site. In the last 6 months Joan has taken more of a back seat role....

June is a busy time for our family with various anniversaries and birthdays and this year just a few days after James’ 28th birthday we took him away for a short holiday. Taking James on holiday isn’t easy. He is most settled in his normal routine. We’ve many times weighed up the pros and cons for him of being taken away from that and wondered what he actually gets out of it....

Taking James on holiday isn’t easy. However, since he moved into supported accommodation, taking James away is a lovely way to spend some extra time with him.

A few months ago, I started writing blogs for Firefly.com. For those of you who have never heard of them, Firefly sell a range of portable postural support products. They aim to provide children the opportunity to experience life face to face with their friends and loved ones to allow them to be fully involved in activities. Firefly also publishes blogs written by parents like myself....

I blog purely from a parent's perspective. As parents of youngsters with additional needs we share many of life’s challenges and the emotions that go with them.

Recently things haven’t gone quite to plan. Darryl and I were meant to be going on holiday in May to a lovely island called Ischia in the Bay of Naples. I’ve been pretty stressed about going away, I still find it very difficult leaving James in anyone but families care and go to great lengths to ensure everything is in place before I go away. ...

Aside from the fact that we had lost the money for our holiday it had taken a lot for me to get myself ready to go, then I felt I’d had the rug pulled from under me.

Two weeks ago we had the pleasure of attending the 30th Anniversary meeting of the Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome Trust. It’s a bi-annual meeting that we have attended many times and it always is an absolute pleasure to spend time with old friends and new with whom we share a unique bond. We became involved with the Wolf Hirschhorn support group through a lady called Chris Hilder who was the founder of the group....

In May we attended 30th Anniversary conference of the Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome Trust. It's a pleasure to spend time with other families with whom we share a unique bond.

A few weeks ago it was National Siblings Day - who even knew that was a thing!! It was on 10th April this year. Its purpose is to celebrate our siblings and our relationship with them. It got me thinking about how my boys sibling experience has been very different to mine. I have just the one sister, Joan, she is two-and-a-bit years older than me as I frequently like to remind her 😉....

National Siblings Day - a day to celebrate our sibling relationships - has made me reflect on how my boys sibling experience is very different to mine.

The end of this month marks three years since James moved from our family home into supported accommodation. A lot of change has taken place in that time. Looking back on what I wrote here on the first and second anniversary of James’ move into supported accommodation, It would be easy to repeat myself: how quickly the time has gone, how I still feel the emotion I felt leaving him on that first day, how tough it’s been to make the adjustment....

It was a day I hadn’t been looking forward to and I was dreading what the outcome would be. I was especially worried that it was going to be tough on James but he coped remarkably well. It’s always difficult with James when going for appointments because whilst you have to anticipate you may run into traffic on your journey and be mindful of not being late, you also don’t want to arrive too early as then ...

I was dreading the dental surgery and worried about the outcome. I was especially worried that it would be tough on James but he coped remarkably well.

When this hits your screens on Saturday morning we will be at the hospital with James. The culmination of months and months of planning which has led us to this point. Today James is having dental surgery under general anaesthetic. Sounds drastic to have to do this under GA and it’s not a decision we have taken lightly. Even after many years of dental appointments with the special care dental service they have not been able to get a good look in James’ mouth....

Today James is at the dentist having surgery and blood tests taken under general anaesthetic. I am more than a little anxious that all goes according to plan.

When I was pregnant with my first son, I was in a job I enjoyed and I had no reason to think that I wouldn’t be able to continue in that role after my baby’s birth. Other women in my workplace had reduced their hours when they had children and that’s what I had planned to do too. After James…...

Pregnant with my first son I had no reason to think that I wouldn’t continue in my job after his birth. In time though I had a choice to make, carer versus career.
