New & emerging research - your Brain has a Critical Point ‘Genius Setting’.

The usual pathways are involved; food & diet, movement, sleep, stress management. (Thereafter optimised adaptability & Neuroplasticity, learning and memory recall come from engaging the Brain’s critical point.)

This also happens to be what Nutritional Therapy covers, guides, optimises & supports 😃

As a Nutritionist I am constantly emphasising & encouraging food diversification, exploration & inclusion. (Unless a Client has an allergy or intolerance, in which case we ensure nutrient gaps are filled & minimised.)

Wholesome food is infinitely complex and fantastically fuelling; it nurtures, nourishes & upholds your health, healthspan, lifespan & Brainspan.

Registered Nutritionists encourage healthful, nourishing, optimal and satisfying food, and ‘Enjoying the Moment’ is critical to Nutritional Therapy.

Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF); ‘fertiliser for the Brain’.

BDNF is made by multiple cells in our Brain & body and is fundamental to Neurone (specialised Brain cell) integrity & optimal Brain & cognitive function & health.

Can be naturally boosted by ‘the usual suspects’ - Diet, Exercise/Movement, Sleep and Stress management.

Get in touch with Kate at Eat Drink Think Nutrition if you would like to know more about how nutrition, diet & lifestyle can support your Brain health, cognitive function, healthspan and Brainspan.

We live in a World swiftly becoming engulfed in toxin influences, and although it can seem overwhelming it really is a case of risk-management.
So trying to minimise your toxin contact & exposure wherever possible will offer small-but-cumulative benefits to preserving & protecting your Brain health & Brainspan.
If you need guidance & support with this there is plenty that Nutritional Therapy can help with for detoxification and renourishment (through diet, possibly carefully & therapeutically selected supplements and lifestyle strategies), so do get in touch if this is a concern for you.

Ultra processed foods are becoming an increasingly discussed topic; for good reason as some of their ingredients can have alarming effects on our body & Brain, (and may be directly & indirectly considered ‘Dementogens’ if frequently & excessively consumed).

Chemicals we would not dream of consuming in their standalone form seem to usurp their ways into food overlooked and unchallenged.

This post highlights a few food item examples, but there are many more.

The best recommendation I can offer as a Registered Nutritional Therapist is to “read the label”, (just like for exams when our School Teachers advised us to “read the question”), and try as often as possible to minimise &/or avoid eating foods containing unpronounceable & overcomplicated ingredients which would not have appeared in the foods your Grandparents ate.

Focusing on real, whole foods, (organic if possible), is more healthful for your healthspan & Brainspan.
Please choose wisely.

Cooking, from scratch or partially-customising a meal, is a great way to combine nutrition and Brain Training!

Cooking stimulates cognitive functioning and encompasses Brain training through;
- choosing what to eat
- thinking about bespoke changes to recipes to suit your tastes & tolerances
- in-person food shopping whenever possible (especially enhancing Brain training when shops change aisle layouts which presents the opportunity for Brain re-training and creating new neural networks)
- physically seeing-hearing-smelling-touching the food offers senses activation and prepares the body for digestion.

All of these are important components in and risk avoidance. The sense of satisfaction experienced in cooking can also be highly uplifting!

(If you are a Carer for someone with mild cognitive decline or a Dementia diagnosis ensure you accompany the person throughout their cooking experience both for safety and for a potentially profound bonding experience.)

This week - 19th-25th May 2025 is DEMENTIA ACTION WEEK

Most of my posts are about how to apply dietary & lifestyle strategies to protect & nourish your Brain to risk-manage against cognitive impairment, decline, and to support the Brain’s function in early-stage Dementia & Alzheimer’s Disease.

Today I want to highlight the contribution and exceptional (often overlooked) hard work that Dementia Carers provide. It is essential that, as a Carer, you do not ignore your own health & wellbeing. The slides offer a few general tips, but please do get in touch with me if you would like a bit of personalised health TLC - your Brainspan is every bit as important as the person’s you are caring for 🧡.

The slides do detail these, but here are some links to organisations and you can contact for advice, empathy and support:

Almost every cell in the body contains Mitochondria - a powerhouse ‘battery’ primarily responsible for generating energy.

Supporting Mitochondria is a branch of nutrition in-and-of itself, since they are so integral to the functioning of every waking-and-sleeping minute of our existence.

However when contextualised to Brain health, looking after your body quite literally at a cellular level is fundamental to optimising cognitive function and mitigating the risk of cognitive decline and Dementia development.

Supporting your cells at the microscopic level can reap tangible macroscopic benefits to your everyday being, so if you are interested to learn more about how food, nutrition and lifestyle can enhance your whole body and Brain health don’t hesitate to get in touch ⬇️
