What actually happens during a home care visit?

It’s one of the most common questions we hear, from sons, daughters, and partners who want to know what kind of support their loved one will receive.

The answer? It depends on the person. But here are just a few things we often help with:

🥣 Preparing breakfast or a warm drink
🛁 Support with washing, dressing, and getting ready for the day
💊 Prompting medication
📬 Helping open post or manage daily tasks
🪴 A short walk or time in the garden
📺 Sitting down for a chat, some telly, or simply being there

If you’re starting to think about home care, we’re here to talk things through.

🏠 Home Means Familiarity, Comfort, and Continuity

For many older people, home means routines, memories and a sense of control.

Live-In Care allows them to stay in that setting with support from a Care Professional who lives in the home, offering help day and night in line with their needs and preferences.

We keep families involved and informed, so everyone feels supported.

If you're considering care options, we’re here to help you explore what’s possible.

📚 Celebrating a Lifetime of Reading 💚 Book Lovers Day

Books can open up more than just stories, they can create quiet moments, shared memories, and simple conversation.

Here are a few ways to enjoy books together, especially with an older loved one:

✔ Choose a book with meaning, something tied to a memory
✔ Take turns reading aloud, even if it’s just a page or two
✔ Let the story lead to a chat, books can bring up old memories
✔ Keep it relaxed, there’s no rush to finish
✔ Let favourite books be read again (and again)

Today’s the perfect time to bring a story back into someone’s day.

Led by our wonderful Community Engagement Coordinator, Lauren, these sessions are relaxed, welcoming, and full of fun for everyone. 🧠💛

This week, we played bingo, had a blast with balloon swatting for some light exercise, and tried our hand at a sticky dartboard game! 🎈🎯 There was plenty of singing, puzzles, and laughter throughout – a truly joyful time for all.

Why not come along and join us? We're at Hornchurch Library on the first Tuesday of every month.

📅 Free to attend

🧠 Understanding Repetitive Questions in Dementia

People living with dementia may sometimes repeat the same question or phrase many times. This behaviour is often known as looping.

It’s not always caused by memory loss alone. Looping can happen when a person has an emotional or physical need they’re struggling to express. They may feel unsettled or anxious, and the repetition is their way of trying to make sense of what’s happening around them.

🔹 Common causes:

Unmet needs (such as pain, hunger, loneliness)

Feeling confused or overwhelmed by the environment

Difficulty processing answers or new information

🔹 Helpful responses:

Stay calm and offer consistent reassurance

Use a gentle tone and clear language

Redirect attention or adjust surroundings if possible

Repetition is often a form of communication. It may be the only way the person can signal that something isn’t right.

When care is personal, life stays personal too.

At Home Instead Romford, we don’t just drop in, we show up. With warmth. With time. With care that honours the person, not just the need.

We take the time to get to know each client, their hobbies, their routines, their favourite way to spend an afternoon, and we build our support around that.

🫖 Familiar faces, not rotating shifts
📘 Time to chat, not just tick boxes
🕊️ Support that preserves dignity and choice

Because home care should feel like a helping hand, not a disruption.

Hello, August 🌻

A new month is here, bringing fresh days to slow down, check in, and be kind to one another.

There’s comfort in familiar routines and small moments shared. Let’s carry that gentle spirit with us in the weeks ahead.

Because Friendship Matters at Every Age 𐀪𐀪

World Friendship Day is a reminder that friendship has no age limit.

It’s the warmth of conversation, the comfort of being remembered, and the gentle reassurance of someone who’s there to listen. For many older adults, friendship can be found in everyday moments. A kind voice, a thoughtful chat, or a regular visit that brings familiarity.

Let’s all take a little time to recognise the friendships that continue to grow, even later in life. A simple phone call, a handwritten note, or a quiet moment shared can mean more than we realise.✨
