Dear Parents/Carers.

This is an invitation for anyone who is caring for either an adult, or a child with SEND. (Please note that you are still classed as an unpaid carer if you receive carers allowance.)

Rutland is developing a new strategy to support all carers including Parent Carers, Young Carers and Young Adult Carers. Carers Conversations have already taken place in January and February to help shape the new strategy proposal. We encourage you to come along to find out more and give your views on the proposal before the new strategy is finalised. Details of how to join are included in the poster.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Kind Regards

The Aiming High and Young Carers Team

Young Carers Action Day

Today (Wednesday 11 March 2026) is Young Carers Action Day. This day raises awareness of Young Carers as well as having a theme. This year the theme is Fair Futures for Young Carers.

Currently only around half of young carers will leave school with 5 GCSE’s. We are working together with schools to improve the outcomes for our Young Carers in Rutland.

We are encouraging all schools to appoint a Young Carers Champion, a person who can be a single point of contact to champion the needs of Young Carers. Along with other staff members in school, we are training them to identify and support young carers so that more are recognised and the right help is given.

Where a champion is in place, Young Carers know that they have a trusted person in school to understand their needs, be a point of contact for emotional support and work to help them achieve their aspirations.

We are also working in partnership with schools to have support groups for young carers within the school setting. Also to make sure that any additional adjustments needed in school are in place to help a young carer to succeed.

We are encouraging all schools to work towards achieving the Rutland County Council Young Carers Champion award, which demonstrates that a school has the right support in place that young carers need.

Our young carers deserve the best chance of a fair future and we are committed to doing everything we can to make this happen for them.

Thank you and well done to Catmose College who received the Champions Award last Summer and to Uppingham Community College who are making great strides towards achieving their Champions Award.
