On International Day of Happiness, it’s important to remember that happiness is not just about promoting the ubiquitous smiley face.

Happiness is more than the pursuit of pleasure and heightened positive emotion. Although these things (hedonic happiness) are important for our wellbeing, they aren’t the be all and end all. A hit of excitement or joy can feel great, but it’s often only fleeting. In fact, plastering a fake smile or forced positivity can often be more harmful than helpful.

Being happy doesn’t mean being the most confident or most upbeat person in the room. Happiness is also about having a deep sense of meaning and purpose, feeling a part of something bigger and having healthy coping strategies to deal with the inevitable obstacles that come our way. An understated and deep contentment. A quiet satisfaction and non-judgemental reflection. Finding this eudaimonic happiness is more sustainable and long lasting than simple pleasure seeking.

The best approach is a combination of both - upbeat joy plus quiet contentment - together with an acknowledgment that it’s ok not to be ok. Negative emotions can serve us too, as long as we observe and accept them.

Getting comfortable with the uncomfortable is all part of building our personal resilience

We don't get to have a meaningful career, raise a family, create change, or leave the world a better place without stress and discomfort.

Discomfort is the price of admission to a meaningful life.

On BMBS send warm wishes to anyone struggling during these difficult times. Give yourself some self-compassion. Go easy on yourself. Minimise that negative self talk and show yourself the love you would show a close friend. You’re not alone. And you’re doing the best you can 💚

July book recommendation: the brilliant Chimp Pardadox by Steve Peters 🤩

Not a new release, but a truly great read.

Steve’s metaphor for understanding how we can be hijacked by our emotions (chimp) is powerful and enlightening.

This book offers insight into how we can manage our emotional reactions, think about and respond to events from a place of calm rationality.

Developing emotional agility is one of the many ways we can become our best selves.

“Natural scenery employs the mind without fatigue and yet exercises it; tranquilises it and yet enlivens it; and thus, through the influence of the mind over the body, gives the effect of refreshing rest and reinvigoration to the whole system” Frederick Law Olmsted.

Being creative in our areas of passion and strength is one way we can increase the number and levels of positive emotions we experience.
This in turn can help us build personal resilience.
But positive emotions are only one pathway to resilience......And everyone is different.....

At BeeMyBestSelf we can work with clients to identify the pathways which will be most beneficial for you. And we can coach you through using some evidence-based and proven techniques for building your own resilience.
