In honour of , I thought I’d share some facts I knew nothing about before I started my first nursing journey. I could have added sooo many more in to this, but tried to keep it brief!

1. Breastfeeding reduces the risks of both breast, & ovarian cancers for the mother (MASSIVE one for me as I carry a very high risk for both).

2. Breastfeeding also reduces the risks of SIDS, infections, and even childhood cancers (!!) - specifically lukemia & lymphoma, for baby too!

3. Breastfeeding produces milk at the perfect temperature. So no need to worry on those hot summer days about sterilising and keeping cold.

4. Even if you return to work pre 12m, or want to work on baby’s sleep, you can keep nursing 💪Even if they’ve allwaayys fed to sleep until now!

5. It’s environmentally sustainable, money saving, plastic free, and a completely live product FULL of immunity benefits and antibodies. It literally changes when your baby is tired, unwell or in a growth spurt!!!

Ok, fine, that last one may have thrown a few extras in 😜🤪🫣.
But baring in mind that breastfeeding can be hard, and the vast majority of mothers in this country still report stopping before they wanted to, or due to bad advice, or lack of support…. Sometimes the good stuff needs saying! And sharing!

What’s your fave fact? Or something that kept you going on the tough days (or longgggg nights 🫠…)?

Whenever I am at a birth, I love watching that incredible dance that mama and baby do together, in unison, in perfect timing. The more unobserved the birth, the more they seem to really get each others cues and work off eachother, it’s genuinely magical to see.
With my last birth, I mostly laboured completely alone, and that connection with my baby is what kept me grounded, able, and motivated.

This poem really captured that for me, so wanted to share it with you all ❤️

💫 Dance Card 💫

You and I had one last long slow dance together alone.

There were other people in the room but it was just you and I dancing.

I travelled from wall to wall, swaying and rocking to down-tempo music, uncomplicated footwork.

You followed my lead perfectly. Our connection was spot-on.

You did your thing: shimmying, sliding, curving and twisting, and I did mine, and we were fantastic partners.

We pulled off the finale beautifully, patient with one another’s timing, not rushing what we both knew was our last moment of complete intimacy.

After this, there would be so many who wanted to dance with you, who loved you as much as I, and I was glad to know that your dance card would be full for all the days you breathed.

But in that split second moment it was still only us.

I reached down into the water, hooked my hands under your arms and lifted you up into the air in one smooth motion.

It was the one time in both our lives that we would perform this way together.

And I know you don’t remember this, but I’m telling you now:

You were exquisite.

Babywearing is such a brilliant way to calm babies, keep them close, and get stuff done.
I honestly don’t know how I would have got through the early days with 1, 2, or 3 (so often solo) without a sling or a carrier !

Having had 2 summer heatwave babies, I had to get to grips with using the sling in the sun very early, and as these boiling days hit, I am reminded of those sticky carrier walks once again.

So here are some hot weather tips:
☀️ Dress lightly
- Remember that you will both act as an extra layer for eachother. Body heat is a powerful thing. So dress lighter than you would otherwise and if it’s really hot, just a nappy / a nappy and a light cotton layer will do for them.

☀️ Cover their head
- If you’re very exposed to sunlight, get a good sunhat on baby, and don’t forget to check the neck and ears!

☀️ Stay hydrated
- Keep both you and them drinking lots. If you’re exclusively breastfeeding, remember they don’t need anything else - but may want to feed more often.

☀️ Protect legs and arms
- Use suncream for babies over 6m and a light muslin for little ones. (Make sure you’re aware of the bits of them that are directly exposed to the sun)

☀️ Sling choice
- If you can, use a lightweight sling or mesh carrier for hot weather

☀️ Stay shaded
- Where possible it’s always best to stay in the shade. Babywearing in the heat, even when done right, is warm and sticky. So best to be shaded where possible.

☀️ Take breaks
Give baby time out the sling / swap with someone else sometimes if possible. Enjoy those cuddles but also the chance for a cold shower whilst someone else holds them!

Any tips that you would add?? 👇

Excitingly as well, we have the amazing Jazz coming to our July coffee club to chat all things slings. So whether you’ve got one you need some help with, or would like to explore the options - book in for a free consultation!!

So many exciting things happening this month!! Lots of things already booked up, and some nearly gone 😮.

But there are still spaces for Friday baby massage , a small number of postnatal doula hours, one Hypnobirthing 1-2-1 slot, and a few spaces at a really amazing coffee club next week!!

Looking forward to working with nearly 100 of you in June 🥳

Would love to hear what you’re joining, or any questions you may have 👇

For some new mamas, the offer to hold the baby / look after the baby / get the baby to sleep is so so welcome, for others it’s an awkward time to say no thank you.

Some of us feel desperate for a break from the holding, some of us just aren’t ready yet to hand the baby over - but would love someone to make us a hot drink or put the dishwasher on.

Whatever we feel here is very normal and very valid.

I often work with postnatal mamas who are worried that they’re being ‘over precious’ when wanting to say no, or ‘not maternal’ enough somehow when wanting to say YES PLEASE!

The whole range of feelings should be accepted in ourselves, and I urge us to give ourselves grace in this vulnerable, intense, emotional and hormonal time.

Would love to hear how you feel when people ask for the baby in those early days and weeks 👇

Just a reminder ❤️

In our postnatal groups, the baby massage classes, and with postnatal doula mamas - this is something I hear a lot.
It’s hard. And often the conclusion is that it’s so hard because you’re just not doing it right. Maybe creating bad habits. Maybe rods for your own back. Maybe you’re weak. Maybe your baby has too much gas. It’s probably colic. Maybe your baby is just a difficult baby. Maybe your baby wants to be held too much. Maybe you’re just not cut out for this. Maybe you’re not good at it. Maybe you’re just missing some crucial stuff.

So I want to remind you of something that may sound basic, but I think is crucial.
📢 It feels hard, because it IS hard 📢

That’s it. Nothing more, and nothing less. Nope to ALLLL of the above.

Give yourself some grace, you’re actually getting up every day (after being up every night) and doing something which is objectively difficult. That’s why it feels that way.
Don’t get me wrong; it’s beautiful and wonderful, and has some of the highest highs. But the hard bits…. Maaaaan they’re hard. 💕

Reflecting on some lovely moments from our last coffee club 🥰

Togetherness, connection, understanding, laughter, and friendship. It truly gives me energy and so much joy for the rest of the month!

The ICB have made their final decision, and both the Royal Free maternity unit and the Edgware Birth Centre are closing.

If you are currently booked there, please don’t worry!! This is not going to be an overnight thing. Farrrr from it! So continue to access your antenatal care as normal.

Did you give birth in either of these places?
What are your thoughts on this process / outcome?
