Too hot to sleep? 🥵
With another heatwave set to hit the UK over the next few days, you might find bedtime is a bit trickier than usual. If your little one is struggling to settle in the heat, you’re definitely not alone. Hot weather can make sleep so much harder – here are a few tips that might help:

🌡️ Keep their room cool
Keep blinds or curtains closed during the day to block out the sun, and open windows early morning or later in the evening to let in cooler air. A fan can help – just point it away from your child or bounce it off a wall for gentle air circulation.

👕 Dress them lightly
A nappy and vest – or just a nappy – is often enough. Go for light, breathable fabrics like cotton. If you’re feeling too hot, they probably are too.

💧 Offer extra fluids
Babies might want to feed more often in the heat, and older little ones may need more water during the day too. Keeping them well-hydrated can really help at bedtime.

🛁 Try a lukewarm bath before bed
Not cold – just slightly cooler than usual. It can gently lower their body temperature and help them feel more comfortable before settling down.

🛏️ Think about where they sleep
If their bedroom feels like an oven, you could try a cooler room for a night or two – even a mattress on the floor somewhere else can help. Just make sure it’s safe and feels right for you.

🌜And remember… it’s temporary
Hot nights can really make sleep tricky for little ones (and parents too!). If naps are shorter or bedtime’s running late, that’s completely normal when it’s this warm.
And let’s be honest – here in Scotland… it’ll probably be cold again by next week anyway!

Hang in there – you’ve got this 💛

Absolutely blown away to be nominated as a finalist for an Excellence in Service award as part of the Pride of Inverurie Awards 💛

I’m so incredibly grateful to those who took the time to nominate me — it truly means a lot. Being recognised for the service I offer is especially meaningful, because that’s what matters most to me: how I make families feel. I want every parent I interact with to feel heard, understood and supported — especially in a world full of noise, judgement and conflicting advice. Helping families feel more confident and less alone is at the heart of everything I do, so this nomination feels really special.

This little business is something I’ve poured my heart into, and to know it’s having an impact on others is honestly what it’s all about for me.

Thank you so much! ❤️

Tess Killoh of has been nominated by you as a finalist in the 'Excellence in Service Award' sponsored by our friends at We are Inverurie - BID!

💛 The Invisible String 💛

Have you read The Invisible String by Patrice Karst? It’s one of my favourite books to recommend for toddlers and school-aged children – especially those who struggle with separation, bedtime worries, or just need a bit of extra reassurance.

The idea behind it is simple but powerful: that we’re all connected to the people we love by an invisible string. Even when we’re apart – like when they’re at school, or when it’s time to say goodnight – that string is still there, keeping us close.

For little ones who are finding it hard to settle at night, especially if they’re going through a phase of separation anxiety or changes in routine, this concept can be such a comfort. Knowing that Mum or Dad (or Granny, or their sibling, or whoever their person is) is still "with" them, even when they’re in their own bed, can really help ease that anxiety and support a more settled bedtime.

It also opens up really gentle conversations about emotions, love, and feeling safe – all of which are so important when we’re trying to create a calm, secure space for sleep.

If your child struggles with saying goodbye at bedtime or wakes looking for you in the night, The Invisible String might just become a bedtime favourite. 💫

✨ If any of this resonates and you’d like some extra support with your child’s sleep – especially around separation, anxiety or bedtime battles – I’d love to help. Drop me a message or get in touch to chat about how we can work together 💛

Day ONE! 🎉

I love hearing updates like this from families I work with. After just one day, this little one is already sleeping better, feeling happier, and more content being away from her mum—proof that gentle changes can make a big difference!

If this is just the start, imagine where they’ll be in a few days… ✨

Wondering When to Start Gentle Sleep Support? Here’s What You Need to Know!

One question I often get asked is, “When should I start sleep training?” (Or as I prefer to say, when should I start supporting my baby to sleep more independently?)

The truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Every baby is different, and every family has unique needs. But here are a few things to consider:

🌙 The early weeks (0-12 weeks) – Newborns have tiny tummies and need frequent feeds, so sleep is often unpredictable. At this stage, they also haven’t yet developed a strong circadian rhythm, meaning they struggle to differentiate between day and night. This usually starts to improve around 8-12 weeks as their internal body clock matures. While newborn sleep can be unsettled, this is a great time to gently encourage positive habits while always being responsive to their needs.

😴 Around 4-6 months – Many babies start developing more consistent sleep cycles, and this can be a good time to gently introduce changes if sleep isn’t working for your family.

🛏 6+ months – If your baby is still struggling with sleep and it’s impacting your well-being, this is a great time to introduce a gentle, responsive approach to help them settle more easily and sleep for longer stretches.

💡 There’s no ‘perfect’ age to start—what matters is that you feel ready. Supporting your baby’s sleep doesn’t mean leaving them to cry or following rigid rules; it’s about making small, gentle adjustments that work for your family. Developing positive sleep habits from the start—while always meeting your baby’s needs—can help lay the foundation for better sleep as they grow.

It's never too late to improve your child’s sleep.

✨ Need some guidance? I’m here to help! Send me a message, and let’s chat about what might work best for your little one. 💛

🌙 Dreaming: The Brain’s Secret Superpower 🧠✨

Did you know that while your child is dreaming, their brain is hard at work? 💤 Dreams are more than just random stories – they play a vital role in your little one’s development.

Here’s how dreams help your child grow and thrive:

✨ 1. Emotional Processing
Dreams help children understand and process their feelings. Whether it’s excitement, frustration, or learning something new, dreaming gives their brain a chance to make sense of it all.

📚 2. Boosts Memory & Learning
During sleep, especially in the dreamy REM stage, their brain is busy ‘filing away’ everything they’ve learned during the day – from new words to motor skills. Sleep = smarter kids!

🧩 3. Problem-Solving
Ever had a “eureka!” moment after a good sleep? Kids’ brains do this too! Dreaming helps them work through challenges and boosts creativity.

🍼 4. Critical for Development
For babies and toddlers, REM sleep (where most dreams occur) makes up 50% of their total sleep. This intense dreaming phase is essential for building and strengthening neural pathways – the foundation for everything from movement to speech.

💡 Why It Matters
A consistent bedtime and enough sleep are essential to make sure your child gets those all-important REM stages. More sleep = more time for dreams to work their magic!

So, the next time your little one has a dreamy smile or chats about their wild adventures in dreamland, know that their brain is doing amazing things while they rest. 🌟

💤 "You don’t understand how amazing it feels to fall asleep quickly!" 💤

These were the words an 11 year old girl recently said to her mum after we worked together on her sleep. She had been taking 2-3 hours to fall asleep every night, with a parent beside her, and would end up in her parents’ bed by morning. When we first started, anxiety around sleep was such a huge barrier for her. This was affecting her mood, concentration and self esteem. Her parents were exhausted and frustrated!

Together, we gently built up her confidence around sleep and tackled her worries. She now takes about 10-15 minutes to fall asleep each night without any support from her parents. She feels much more able to cope with school and her parents have their evenings back! Hearing how proud and happy she is now is wonderful!

Helping children and their families feel empowered around sleep is the why behind everything I do. Sleep is such a cornerstone of mental and physical well-being for children. To see them not only get the rest they need but also feel joyful about it? It doesn’t get much better than that. ❤️

If sleep struggles are taking over your evenings and you’re not sure where to start, I’m here to guide you through it. Let’s make positive changes, one gentle step at a time.
