I work with so many people that strive for unrealistic personal goals, worn out by trying to fulfil unrealistic expectations that they set for themselves. So often these expectations are formed in our early years, maybe even inherited from parental and authority figures. Social media can add to the stresses and strains of how we think we should be living, thinking and feeling. Some days are challenging, demanding, routine and we feel irritated and fed up - surely this is all part of being human, right? What we might really need is to chat honestly about our day, wear our Pj's, watch nonsense on TV whilst eating popcorn, spend time on hobbies - guilt free! How do we stop trying to be perfect, stop teaching our children that they need to be perfect? How do we break the cycle and free ourselves? Compassion for others, compassion for ourselves, time to connect with who we really are and what we really need.
New research suggests that breaking the cycle could help recovery.
