No one warned me how weird it feels to charge for care.

I believe in boundaries.
I believe in valuing the work.

But there’s still a part of me that feels off when I hit “send invoice.”

Because therapy is sacred.
And money feels… transactional.

Balancing the two?

That’s its own emotional labour no one talks about.

Not every ethical dilemma is dramatic.

It’s not always child protection or mandated reporting.

Sometimes it’s:
Do I accept that follow request?
Do I wave if I see a client at the supermarket?
Do I laugh at a joke that might be a defence?

It’s daily. Quiet. Constant.

And most people never realise how much we weigh it all.

To speak or not to speak, that is the question.

Do I ask the hard question now?

Do I give silence more time?

Do I pull them back, or let them keep going?

Those micro-decisions don’t show up in reports.

But they shape the whole session.

Therapists are always watching the clock in two ways.

One eye on the story,

One eye on the time.

Knowing when to let someone open up,
and when to gently land the session so they don’t leave raw.

It’s invisible work.

But it’s essential.

Counselling is also remembering the things they thought you’d forget

The pet’s name.

The off-hand comment about an anniversary.

The way they described a childhood photo.

It’s not in the notes.

It’s in the connection.

And when you bring it back,

they know they were really heard.

The hardest work doesn’t always happen in session

It’s the hours writing notes I hope capture the nuance.

It’s reviewing supervision tapes and cringing at myself.

It’s lying awake, thinking: what did I miss?

The session is the visible part.

The rest is what makes it possible.

Even empathy has a cost

I lean in, I attune, I feel with them.

That’s the job. That’s the privilege.

But no one tells you how much it takes from your body.

How exhausted your nervous system feels after a day of being steady for everyone else.

The empathy doesn’t switch off.

It lingers until I find ways to reset.

Note to Self – Carrying the work

You don’t leave every session behind.

And that’s not failure.

The stories stay with you.
The silence stays with you.
Sometimes the weight does too.

It doesn’t mean you’re unprofessional.

It means you’re human.

Make time to put it down.

I love when someone tells me, ‘My friend noticed

The client might not see it yet.

But their partner does. Their kids do. Their friends do.
It’s not just about what happens in session.

It’s about who they’re becoming in the rest of their life.

And hearing that reflected back?

That’s gold.

A therapist’s care doesn’t end when the sessions do.

We think about our clients, we hope they are healing, growing, and thriving.

We hope they feel safe.

We hope they know we still root for them, even from afar. 🖤

Therapy isn’t always heavy. Sometimes it’s joy.

No one talks about the laughter.

The in-jokes. The silly metaphors that stick.

The relief when someone realises they can laugh and heal at the same time.

Those moments are medicine too.

Laughter doesn’t take away the pain but it makes carrying it feel possible.
