My 3x great grandparents Samuel Patchett and Mary West married 202 years ago today.
Mary already had a two year old daughter Frances who appears to have spent much of her childhood with her grandmother who she was named after.
Samuel and Mary went on to have twelve children together. The family moved to Waltham in Lincolnshire in about 1828. Samuel and Mary remained there caring for their children and eventually for three illegitimate granddaughters.
In 1851 and 1861 Samuel worked as an Agricultural Labourer, but by 1871 he was receiving Parish Relief.
Samuel died of ‘Old Age’ soon after the Census was taken, in July1871, when he was 74. Mary survived him by seven years and died in early December 1878.

My Embroidered Ancestors signatures table cloth is almost complete. I'm still searching for two elusive marriage records, possibly hidden in Lincolnshire's local archives.
Embroidering along the pen strokes of my ancestors has brought me closer to them in some ways.
Joseph Dabb and his daughter Mary formed the letters of their surname in exactly the same way.
Mary Handley pronounced her surname as Hanla, Michael Green added the 'e' to his first name, above the line - after all the spelling Michal makes much more sense!
Each signature reveals something of its creator

Today is the 123rd wedding anniversary of my great grandparents Ernest William Goddard and Betsy Steele. Betsy was born in Alford Lincolnshire in 1878, but moved with her family to Grimsby where she met and married Ernest.
Ernest described himself as a Master Builder and was credited with building the Nunsthorpe Maternity Home in Grimsby.
Betsy and Ernest raised a family of four daughters and one son before Ernest's death in 1948.

In my research project this week I discovered a family where an uncle and nephew changed their surnames to two completely unrelated names after WW2, and another couple used two different surnames for their eight children - but helpfully left records with their children's dates of birth which made it possible to confirm I had found the right family.
Great detective work- if I do say so myself! 😆

Over Christmas I had a little break between Family History projects so I took up a new hobby. Of course it is family history related! I am embroidering my ancestors signatures onto a table cloth! Embroidery is completely new to me so I think I am doing OK! Now it's time to get back to the real work - researching a family tree of five generations and investigating how a stately home passed from one family to another. 😁

My Ancestors John Hodgson and Mary West married 214 years ago today. John was the only son of Valantine Hodgson and grandson of Valantine Hodgson senior, both of whom signed Lincolnshire parish registers while acting as Church Warden.
John and Mary had ten children and moved from Fulstow to Cleethorpes in Lincolnshire.
Later records give John and his children's surnames as Hodson and Hotchin.
John died during the cholera epidemic in Cleethorpes in 1854

This week saw the 204th anniversary of my 3x great gransparents Samuel Thornalley & Susanna Coates. Susanna was a 28 yr old widow with 5 daughters. She and Samuel had 8 more children before Susanna died aged 55. Samuel remarried & had another son, but still supported his stepdaughters and their families until his death.

Today is the 120th anniversary of the marriage of my great grandparents Frank Hotson & Harriet Alice Forman.
Frank was the youngest of 10 children, his father died when he was 5 months old and Frank's mother worked as a charwoman to support her children. In 1939 Frank was a fish dock labourer in Grimsby, while Alice ran a shop from the family home.

In September I received two amazing emails from clients who were pleased with my work.
This is the first, from John, who asked me to build upon the information he had already gathered about the family of one of his ancestors.
Its always so absorbing and fascinating learning about the lives of people from the past - and 'thinking out of the box' to solve brick walls - so it feels really special when someone takes the time to tell me how pleased they were with my work.

This week I have been looking at examples of the signatures of my ancestors. Mainly from church marriage registers but also from 17th century parish registers, Wills and Census records. I have found 95 signatures which means I can trace literacy as it is continued thru generations- father to son, but also mother to daughter.
I'm learning a lot about my family too.
Here are the signatures of my ancestors Thomas and Stephen Willarton.
Stephen was sadly widowed 3 times but his bereavements mean I have 3 examples of his handwriting.
