The UK government is testing the Emergency Alerts system on Sunday 7 September 2025 at 3pm.

Compatible mobile phones and tablets will receive an alert, make a loud siren-like sound and vibrate. You will not need to take any action.

The Emergency Alerts system is used to warn if there’s a danger to life nearby, including extreme weather. Regular testing ensures the system is functioning correctly, should it need to be used in a life-threatening emergency.

Find out more at gov.uk/alerts

You can opt out of emergency alerts. For example, victims of domestic abuse with a concealed phone may find it appropriate to turn off alerts.

Stay safe in the heat this summer

We’ve got some top tips for you to plan ahead and beat the heat this summer:

• Stay hydrated – water and diluted squash or lower fat milks are good choices.
• Store your medication safely – most medicines should be stored below 25 degrees.
• If you or someone you care for is hot, sponge or spray cool water or use cold packs to cool things down.
• Eat later in the evening – consider eating cold food like ice lollies during the day to keep you hydrated.
• Open doors and windows in the early mornings and overnight when it’s cooler.
• Use air fans if the temperature is below 35 °C (95°F). Higher than that you will just be moving hot air around.

K5 Better Together

The new year marks the beginning of an exciting new venture for Kidlington and the surrounding villages, with the launch of a project promoting wellbeing and community cohesion.

Following an initial consultation, where stakeholders including businesses, community groups and school leaders were invited to offer their opinions, Cherwell District Council have unveiled the new healthy place shaping programme, K5 Better Together.

Based on the experiences of the Healthy Bicester model, K5 Better Together is designed to enable people who live or work in Kidlington, Islip, Yarnton, Begbroke and Thrupp, to enjoy healthy, happy lives where it is easy to be active, eat healthily, and be a good neighbour.
