“How can I be authentically myself?” is arguably one of the biggest questions we can ask, and often seems impossible to answer. The masks we wear to conform to expectations, whether from ourselves, our family and peers, or society more widely often become so embedded that we mistake them for who we really are. Today’s New Moon in Scorpio invites us to begin shedding these masks and any obstacles that prevent us from living our truth. In modern astrology, Scorpio is ruled by Pluto, the Lord of the Underworld, and asks us to dive deep and consider how in alignment we really are with our lives. Mercury is currently retrograde in Scorpio and today forms a conjunction with the Sun, providing moments of great insight, meaning this is an optimal time for introspection as well as jotting down any sudden realisations. A good starting point for reflection could be to ask yourself honestly which activities and relationships energise you, and which ones sap your energy.
Mercury retrogrades are times to slow down and review what is and is not working in our lives, rather than hastily marching forwards. Mercury is retrograde until 29 November, and remains in Scorpio until December 11, so this is a fruitful time to mull over what it means to be wholeheartedly yourself. Scorpio concerns itself with death and rebirth, and reminds us that letting go of old masks and ways of thinking can be scary, but it is from this “death” that something new and wonderful can be born. During this time you may find it beneficial to start a practice of freewriting (journalling without stopping for a few pages without overthinking what you are putting down) in order to cut through the layers of your day-to-day thoughts and beliefs. You could also try dream journalling to see if there are any repetitive subconscious themes that are affecting your waking life. Some people may understandably find this astrological energy intense and difficult to deal with, so remember to be kind to yourself and practise self-care. For many (if not most) of us, the journey to living authentically is not an easy one, but the blessings that it brings are some of the greatest to be found.
