Thank you to all the Stryker team and Andrew Sidebottom for inviting me to attend a really useful and informative 2 days of clinical discussions around jaw joint replacement surgery. Thank you for allowing me to present one of my complex patients and to my European colleagues for useful discussions and feedback.

It was very interesting to understand the history of the Stryker company and the new acquisition of TMJ Concepts.

Very humbled to receive this review this week. I am lucky to work with some great orthodontists, theatre, recovery and ward staff, not to mention clinic staff. From the moment I met Mr Parbhoo from my diagnosis all the way through to post surgery he put me at ease and I had full assurance and trust in him that he had my best interests at heart when helping me choose the best surgical options for my head reconstruction. He showed compassion care throughout. The outcome of my surgery is better than i could have imagined with Mr Parbhoos help he minimised the impact visually of what could have been life changing surgery for me. I can’t thank him enough for eliminating the cancer on my skin and helping through a very difficult time. I couldn’t recommend his care enough.

Absolutely superb. Didn’t feel rushed at any point, and I was provided with a full explanation about everything that was discussed and the excision biopsy that Mr Parbhoo would be undertaking. Very professional.

I asked to have a procedure done under local anaesthetic rather than general anaesthetic for personal reasons. Mr Parbhoo was excellent at explaining the full procedure to me both beforehand and during the procedure. Mr Parbhoo has an excellent bedside manner and during the procedure he put me totally at ease. At every step of the procedure he explained what he would be doing and advised me what I needed to do if I felt in any discomfort or pain. You cannot underestimate the importance of this when going through a medical procedure. He made an unpleasant experience far more tolerable.

I am delighted to announce that I have been appointmed as the Freedom to Speak Up Ambassador for Spire Harpenden Hospital. This is a really important role to provide staff with the ability to report any concerns about patient safety and staff well-being. It ties in with my human factors interest and the Civility Saves Lives Campaign which is very close to my heart, and a fundamental principle of safe healthcare.

It was fantastic to co-organise a trustwide online conference on Human Factors in Healthcare with Deb Biswas today. We had some excellent internal and external speakers, and have hopefully made some small steps forward as an organisation. I am very grateful to all who attended and to those who took time to prepare talks. We are better, safer and stronger together.

It was even better to work together with my brother, a leader in human factors for the first time in our careers!

I am delighted to announce that those having NHS TMJ arthroscopy at Bedfordshire Hospitals NHSFT will now get the same outcomes as those treated privately. After several years of meetings, discussions and business cases I now have the very small TMJ arthroscopes at the L&D to get into narrow or difficult joints more easily. This is a positive move forward in very challenging times. Thank you to all of you who have helped make this possible.

Just received my first 4 patient reviews on Doctify, my new web based platform for video consultations and patient feedback.

Patients have found video consultations immensely helpful during the pandemic both in the NHS and privately. Running a specialist service covering a large geographical region of over 20,000km2 means patients have to travel for up to 3 hours each way for an appointment. The pandemic has spurred the NHS into providing video consultations that have reduced the need for patients to travel as much. Bedford Hospital incorporated this technology early and it is now available for all patients in our trust.

I can now offer confidential and secure video consultations in the NHS and privately for anyone that wishes.

It is Children’s Mental Health Week this week. The charities Changing Faces and Saving Faces have always campaigned to raise awareness of facial diseases and growth problems. The campaign by Changing Faces is really important. Discrimination, bullying and abuse are never ok.
