The gut brain connection is well known, so it should come as no surprise that we can help anxiety with what we eat.

A really interesting CPD with Dr Rebecca Hiscutt on 'Food, Mood and Teens: A guide to nutrition for stress and anxiety' reminded me how crucial it is to make sure that our teens tummies and brains are getting what they need!

Ideally all the time of course, but especially as they head into the exams and want to be calm and focused.

The starting point in her opinion, was making sure that they are getting some protein at breakfast, ideally before anything else, but work with what you have!.

This will help stabilise blood sugars, nourish the gut (allowing it to help produce all the neurotransmitters it needs to), minimise inflammation and generally help them to be calm and thrive.

So, anything you can do to encourage them to have some protein at breakfast - preferably before anything else, will help set them up for the day.

And if you can get them into the habit before exam day, even better!

If your teen is struggling with anxiety (either general or related to exams) please feel free to get in touch, I might be able to help.

Likewise Dr Rebecca Hiscutt is a (very lovely) dietician who specialises in working with young people who are experiencing anxiety.

Back to school, back to work for lots of us tomorrow.

Try to include something today that will help you shore up your reserves for whatever is coming your way this week.

As we come towards the end of the Easter Holidays some students may think that it is too late to turn things around before the exams this summer.

It isn't!

There is still lots that can be done.

Both in terms of work and learning, and getting your head in a good place.

If you're struggling with either of those and you want it to be different - I can help. Get in touch.

Everyone goes on about teenagers and sleep. Understanding why it is so important for learning though is really key.

Firstly, it is when we process anxiety (which runs quite high around exam time - if you hadn't noticed!)

Secondly, while teenagers are sleeping 'synaptic pruning' is going on. The brain is basically weeding out any info it doesn't think they need, in order to make way for new info. Again, fairly crucial during a period where we are trying to learn lots of stuff.

Lastly, if the brain hasn't been able to fully reset over night, then we become much more reactive the next day. Small things will tip us over the edge.

Basically any small gain you can make to get more sleep, or better quality sleep will help generally, but especially during exam season.

What one thing could you try to get a better night's sleep tonight?

Over the Easter holidays, or while on study leave it's highly likely that students go from their beds (if they can get out of them!) to their desks.

And then wonder why they can't get going!

Our brains react to daylight. The light signals that cortisol should be produced, which give us some get up and go, and turns off the production of the sleep hormone.

When we are physically moving through space, to get to college or to work for example, we are naturally exposed to it. But when we stay home, we're not.

So to give the brain the best chance of gearing up for a productive day (or even just half an hour) do whatever you can to get this daylight.

It only needs to be for 5-10 minutes.

Getting outside is best. But if that's not possible stand by a window...

Maybe have your morning cuppa or breakfast outside.
Or stand out there while you check your messages.

What could you do to get some morning daylight?

For students with exams this summer, the Easter holiday is a key time to get a good chunk of work done.

Whatever stage of that journey you're at, making sure that your head is in a good place is crucial.

It's crucial to...enable you to start.
It's crucial to...ensure your brain retains and can recall everything you are learning.
And it's crucial so that all your hard work doesn't go out the window because you freak out at the sight of the exam room.

There are lots of (really simple) things that will help you get your head in a good place, in the lead up to exams.

Follow me to find out.

Brain's hate anything out of the ordinary... any change is seen as a threat.

Exams aren't something we do every day.

Teachers (and parents) might be putting a bit of pressure on...

We might have to get certain grades to move onto the next thing we want to do, so we put pressure on ourselves...

In this situation it is completely natural that our brain will react! And we all react differently to that type of stress.

But when we understand what is going on, we can choose how we respond. And the good news is there are lots of different ways to help your brain cope!

If you, or someone you know could do with some help in the lead up to the exams, then feel free to get in touch.

What feels like the very first thing you need to do that will help you towards your exams?

For me, it always started with tidying my desk, or creating a colour coded revision planner 😆

For you, it might be digging out the syllabus, or installing an app on your phone that stops messages coming through for a period of time so you can crack on.

Think about where you are, where you want to get to, and what the very first step on that journey could be (there might be several - but just pick one).

And then do it!

And clock how amazing you feel once you have!!

Not starting isn't necessarily laziness!

Our brain, when faced with a situation that is new and unknown to it (which let's face it, exams are) goes into 'fight, flight or freeze'. That paralysis, or inability to even pick up a pen and start is completely natural.

But there are things that we can do to help calm the brain.

So that you can start, so that you can retain the information you're trying to learn, and so you can do as well as you possibly can on the day of the exam.

If you, or someone you know is struggling to start, I may be able to help. Please get in touch for a completely free consultation.

Only 6 weeks until the exam season starts properly!

It's really important in the lead up to exams that our heads are in a good place.

It helps motivate us to start doing some work, it helps us to absorb the info we're trying to learn, and it helps us put exams into perspective.

If you, or someone you know, could do with some help getting their head into a good place for the upcoming exams, then please feel free to reach out

Often fitting a dog walk in around the school run and clients can feel like a real chore.

This morning it was an absolute pleasure!

The sun was out, everyone was cheery, there was a big bumble bee in a lovely patch of hellebores-a great way to start the day.

Will definitely be one of my positives this evening!
