We all understand that our horse's bodies change with age, but have we considered how this impacts their ability to carry weight?

New research suggests that horses over 18 show significant increases in spinal muscle sensitivity 2 hours after ridden work even with light weight riders (classed as around 10% of the horse's bodyweight). This contrasts with horses aged between 13 and 18, who only showed increased sensitivity to heavy weight riders (around 20% of the horse's body weight). This is a clear indication that the horses in this study were less able to carry a rider at older ages owing to faster muscle fatigue.

While factors such as differences between individual horses, rider ability, fitness and horse body condition also play a role in our horse's availability to carry us, it is vital that we consider more how aging may change the athletic ability of the horse.

Thank you to Animal Therapy Network - Cornwall for organising a talk focusing on rider weight, and to Jenna Payne for completing and presenting this vital research. The more we know, the better our animals lives will be 🌟

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 "We wish we had found Chloe years ago. The difference in our dog, Whisper, after three sessions goes way beyond our expectations. Due to Whisper's ongoing medical issues she has always been nervous and in pain. Chloe's brilliant treatment has decreased her pain and increased her confidence. Chloe's knowledge, expertise and natural gift for dealing with animals is incredible. We always look forward to her visits. Five stars doesn't even begin to rate how good she is."

Its so lovely to get such kind reviews from my clients! Making a difference to your animals truly is why my job is so great! ❤️

So excited to share some of the brilliant photos that Parker's Gundogs took for me when he came along to some of my treatment sessions earlier this month!

Elliot is a brilliant photographer, and offers canine photography sessions! He is also a knowledgeable and kind trainer, and I am looking forward to booking Sid on to one of his gun dog training classes soon! 🐶🌟

I can't wait to share some more photos with you over the coming weeks!

Would you recognise ridden pain in a horse that isn't overtly lame?

Some horses can appear sound in hand or on the lunge, but show pain behaviours under saddle.

Behaviour such as working with the head behind the vertical for 10 seconds or more, ears held consistantly behind the vertical, clamping the tail, or working on three tracks are all symptoms of equine pain which may go unrecognised.

Pain behaviours such as stopping consistently at fences, particularly drop fences, as well as the horse landing from a jump with their ears back frequently can all be indications of forelimb foot pain.

Researchers have developed the Ridden Pain Horse Ethogram to aid riders, trainers and professionals in recognising these signs of pain. Many of the behaviours listed are 10 times more likely to be seen in a lame horse. A score of 8 or above out of 24 is an indication that pain investigation is needed.

This research development is a great step forward in equine welfare, and its use in every day riding is essential to monitor and improve the comfort of our equine friends.

Like their human counterparts, athletic dogs like Pip can benefit from physiotherapy treatment to keep them happy and healthy, letting them do what they do best!

Massage and electrotherapies can help with tight muscles, and remedial exercises are great to keep their bodies healthy, and their minds active and learning new things! 🌟

The sun is shining and we are all enjoying the lovely weather!

An important consideration for your horses in the heat is that their sweat has an increased ion concentration compared to humans. This is what sometimes makes their sweat foamy! The downside to this is that they can easily lose electrolytes during hot weather.

Horses can sweat up to 15 litres per hour during moderate exercise. Therefore, while the weather is warm, free access to water is even more essential, and electrolytes may be added to their food or water to ensure your horse remains healthy!
