If you’re using yoga to lose weight, or change the way you look…
STOP!
Newsflash: you’re not actually using yoga.
You’re doing exercise.
That’s not yoga.
That’s exercise.
If you think it’s yoga, that’s because nowadays people think extended, excessive and exhausting asana practice is yoga and they push themselves to achieve something, rather than simply participating in the beauty that is life itself. Maybe your heart is actually telling you “hey, stop being at war with me!”
If you want to lose weight, you can move your body, breathe excessively, sweat, scream, and push your limits until you break.
You can be at war with yourself, if your life, and the world around you, have convinced you that’s what you need because you are not enough.
But that’s not yoga.
…
Don’t make yoga a verb.
Just be you, which is the perfect, beautiful expression of life.
Then you could, if you felt like it, celebrate that fact by participating each day in it. Beautiful practice where you connect to the power of life itself, moving and breathing in simple, profound and beautiful combinations that support you to be a kind, caring and loving human being.
…
Yoga is a practice of love.
❤️
So if you are not feeling good about yourself, that’s ok. There is nothing wrong with you, and nothing to fix.
It’s called being a human being.
The body is the mirror of the mind.
If you would like to lose weight because you recognise that you’ve made some decisions in life that have not been very skilful, and you have developed some unskilful patterns and ways of dealing with the challenges of life, now we are getting somewhere.
Look through the doorways of your heart.
Ask a simple question:
Am I being kind, caring and loving to myself?
Atha yogānuśāsanam.
Now yoga can begin.
