Improving prescription workload with NovaMed

A GP practice already using our NovaDoc service came to us with a growing challenge around daily prescription queries.

Their medication management team was under increasing pressure and, as a result, important medication reviews were starting to fall behind.

After reviewing the practice’s existing process, our lead pharmacist identified that many of the queries reaching pharmacists did not always need pharmacist-level input straight away. With the right support model in place, a large proportion could be handled safely and efficiently by appropriately trained team members.

To address this, we introduced our pharmacy technician support service, creating a more structured approach across the medication workflow.

This included support with:

reviewing medication requests

suggesting suitable alternatives during stock shortages

synchronising medications

carrying out accurate medicines reconciliation

The impact was felt quickly.

Within just two weeks, tasks needing pharmacist intervention were reduced by 90%. That gave the practice space to catch up on medication reviews and allowed the medication management team to spend more time where it matters most, supporting patient care.

Sometimes, relatively small workflow changes can make a significant difference to both staff capacity and patient outcomes.

If you would like to see more examples of how we support practices, or learn more about our services, get in touch.

Managing medicines-related workload in general practice

Hospital discharges, medication queries, repeat prescription issues, medicines reconciliation and monitoring requirements can all create significant workload for practices.

Our remote NovaMed Service helps practices manage medicines-related tasks safely, efficiently and in a way that fits around existing ways of working.

Our support includes:

Medicines reconciliation for hospital discharges and clinic letters

Medication reviews, repeat template reauthorisations and management

Repeat dispensing management

Safety audits

Prescribing queries and medicines information support

High-risk drug monitoring

QOF and enhanced service support

Chronic disease reviews

Medicines optimisation projects

Structured Medication Reviews (SMRs)

Care home medicines support

Medicines-related patient contacts

Pharmacist-led clinics, including minor ailments, mental health and hypertension

All of this can be delivered remotely and flexibly by Nova Healthcare Solutions, helping to reduce the day-to-day people management burden on practices by providing a reliable, managed service that does not require additional in-house supervision, recruitment or rota coordination.

Our services are designed to integrate seamlessly with existing practice workflows and can be tailored to the needs of individual practices or PCNs.

Our aim is to help practices:

Reduce GP workload
Improve medicines safety
Free up clinical time for patient care

If your practice or PCN is exploring additional pharmacy support, please feel free to get in touch.

In 2025, 75% of the organisations that joined us did so following recommendations from practices already using our services.

Our work includes providing practical day-to-day support to primary care such as clinical document workflow and the delivery of remote clinics alongside a wider range of services tailored to practice needs.

We see peer recommendations as a reflection of how this support is experienced in practice and we’re grateful to the organisations and practices who continue to place their trust in us.

Shaping Services Through Real Conversations

Most of the insight we use to shape our services doesn’t come from dashboards. It comes from conversations.
At NovaHS, communication sits right at the centre of everything we do. When we understand practices properly, we can build services that genuinely help and make a real difference in Primary Care.

Understanding Each Practice from Day One

Our first meetings with practices are about understanding how things really work day to day. What is going well. What is proving difficult. What pressures are building.

These conversations also help us confirm whether our service is the right fit, because our aim isn’t to take on the entire country’s clinical document workflow but to support practices that need stability and consistency so they can create a more balanced working environment for their teams.

Keeping the Dialogue Going

Once we begin working together, the conversations do not stop. We check in regularly to see how things are progressing, hear about any new challenges and make sure the service continues to reflect the pressures and priorities the practice is facing.

Staying connected like this helps us stay ahead of change rather than reacting to it.

Insights That Come from Real Experiences
We learn the most from speaking with practices directly. Whether it is through routine reviews, day to day updates or face to face discussions at occasions such as LMC events, these moments give us the kind of insight you only get from frontline experience.

This understanding is what allows us to refine and evolve our services, so they genuinely support practices in the ways that matter most.

By keeping communication at the heart of our approach, we build partnerships based on trust, understanding and genuine collaboration. It is how we help practices strengthen their systems, support their teams and ultimately deliver better care for patients.

If this approach resonates with you, we are always happy to chat

At Nova Healthcare Solutions, our work is guided by three simple principles: safety, efficiency and cost effectiveness.

We work alongside practices and healthcare organisations to support the day-to-day areas that carry the greatest administrative and clinical workload.

Our services include:

• Clinical correspondence processing and backlog clearance

• Clinical record summarisation and coding support

• Long Term Conditions, triage, minor illness and fit note clinics

• Pharmacy technician support and medication reviews

• Medicines optimisation and prescribing-related audits

Our focus is on reducing avoidable risk, supporting existing teams and creating capacity where it is needed most.

If it’s useful to explore how this kind of support could work in your setting, we’re always open to a conversation.

Remote Triage & Minor Ailments Support for GP Practices

At NovaHS, we work with GP practices to help manage demand safely and efficiently through our Remote Triage / On-Call Support service.

Designed to enhance daily capacity, our service focuses on understanding both local care pathways and the individual workings of each practice.

This ensures patients are triaged effectively and routed to the most appropriate service first time. In practice, we are able to resolve around 60–70% of patient needs remotely through telephone consultation.

We take a collaborative approach, working closely with practices to understand their internal systems and pathways. Our clinicians receive tailored training on each practice’s processes, while practice teams are supported to identify which patient contacts are most suitable for remote triage.

The service is flexible by design:
Practices using online consultation systems can allocate dedicated triage slots, supported by follow-up calls

Practices without online systems can integrate NovaHS clinicians directly into their existing on-call model

Each triage interaction results in a clear next step, whether that’s remote treatment, a planned face-to-face appointment with safety netting, or referral into appropriate local services such as pharmacy or physiotherapy.

If you’d like to explore how remote triage could support your practice, we’d be happy to have a conversation.

“.......exactly what we need at such a large practice”

We often hear from practices who come to us for support with a specific challenge and then decide to stay with us for the long term. Feedback like this explains why.

“We started using NovaHS in order to clear a large backlog of clinical documents. They did such a great job at processing these in a timely way that we decided to continue using their service to manage our whole document workflow process, which has proved invaluable. Their clinical expertise, knowledge, their ability to work accurately and efficiently is exactly what we need at such a large practice. Thanks!”

— Hazel, Administration Manager, Elm House Surgery

Many practices begin by working with us to tackle immediate pressures. What we’re proud of is that, once teams see how we work, they often choose to keep that support in place.
It’s a real testament to the clinical expertise, care and consistency our teams bring to every practice we support.
Thank you to Elm House Surgery and Hazel for sharing your experience.

Saturday 20 December marks International Human Solidarity Day 2025, a moment to pause and reflect on what it really means to stand together.

Solidarity can sound like a big global idea, but in everyday life it often shows up in quiet, meaningful ways.

In healthcare, that looks a lot like primary care.

It is often the first place people turn with questions or concerns. A familiar face. A conversation that starts early, builds trust over time and focuses on the whole person rather than a single symptom or moment in time.

Through the practices we work with, we see this every day. Teams showing up for their communities, building long term relationships and supporting people long before they reach a point of crisis.

Strong primary care helps ensure people feel supported, listened to and cared for. It connects individuals to healthier communities and reminds us that no one should have to navigate their health alone.

Health is personal and it is something we share.

🩵 November is Diabetes Awareness Month, highlighting the importance of early detection, ongoing monitoring, and understanding how diabetes affects people across different life stages.

This year’s World Diabetes Day theme, “Diabetes Across Life Stages,” reflects how experiences of diabetes shift from childhood through older age. The related focus on well-being draws attention to the wider physical, mental, and social impacts seen throughout a person’s life.

In primary care, these themes are reflected in the role that routine reviews, screening programmes, and regular check-ins play. Invitations for diabetes check-ups contribute to early identification of changes, continuity of care, and a clearer picture of long-term health needs within communities.

Key benefits often linked to these check-ups include:

Identifying early signs of complications

Supporting adjustments in treatment

Monitoring overall well-being

Reducing risks linked to heart, kidney, and eye health

💙 Diabetes Awareness Month offers an opportunity to highlight the lifelong nature of diabetes and the value of consistent engagement with established primary care pathways.
